Steven's Woodworking Brushes (2)
Dec 29, 2008 - 10:32 PM - by sicboater
Gentlemen, for your gratification I present a review of two Steven's woodworking brushes from Straight Razor Designs.

Brush #1

Knot: 28mm silvertip light bulb shaped.
Loft: 63mm
Overall length: 140mm
Handle: Ebony Stabilized with Danish Oil, hand rubbed finish

Quaility: 9.5
The knot lost three hairs and since has not lost any at all even under extremely robust brushing. I do not consider this an issue at all. The precision is pretty amazing: the knot is seated well and epoxied very nicely in place. Overall the dimensions are quite well balanced for such a large brush.
Post bloom this is a monster lather lash!

Lather making ability

Soap: 10
Despite being soft, the bristles have enough backbone to load with soap... [Read More]

Straight razor saves life of Mother and Child.... again
Dec 23, 2008 - 9:48 PM - by Ben325e
I know that everyone is getting so sick of seeing how straight razors are saving lives all the time, but I thought I'd just post one more....

WKYC.com | Cleveland, OH | Truck driver uses razor to save mother, child from wrecked SUV

I'm going to keep a straight razor in my pocket from now on, right beside my CPM-D2 Kershaw Leek. Any razor restorers out there want to put a pocket clip on my boker?

hehehe

Wiki Contest!
Nov 30, 2008 - 12:06 AM - by ByronTodd
Constant Shaver,

I do hereby announce the official beginning of the first SRP wiki contest. The contest will run until Jan 7th, and be announced during the chat on Jan 11th. The basics are pretty simple, write an article in the wiki (write an award winning article!), win a prize.

Prizes and Awards are as such:
Team Prize (Two razors, see attached photos).
Best How To (Razor to be announced later, perhaps a custom handle by Lynn).
Best Photograph (Bucket of Soaps from www.straightrazordesigns.com).

How it works:

Start and finish any article by the end of the contest. Email the link to dave@straightrazorplace.com. Articles must be started by the contestant, or be in stub format before. The wiki is temporarily setup to allow only the author of the article to edit it (Except for a small group of super users).

The team prize is designed to promote writers to team with photographers, restoration experts to team with the computer geeks, etc. Any combination of teams and any number of team members is acceptable. You'll have to figure out how to divy up the razors .

Any questions on how to use the wiki can be asked in this thread, and we'll do... [Read More]

So how exactly are the Coticule stones which we all love so much produced?
Nov 08, 2008 - 1:46 PM - by ArdennesCoticule
The atelier:

The place were the magic happens: our workhouse, store, storage room and bureau (located in the Belgian Ardennes).
Coticule whetstones have been produced in this building (built in approx. 1865) for over 140 years.
The left part of the building (2 windows, 1 door and another window) is the main workplace (atelier). This is the place were the raw Coticule rocks are cut up into pieces and the end products (Coticule and BBW whetstones in all sort of sizes) are made.
The right part of the building (large arc window with a door in the middle) is our store, storage room and bureau space.

This atelier is also used to produce natural construction stones (like the ones our building is made off). These stones are stored in pallets in front of the building.

The quarry:

Our quarry is located at "Thier del Preu" (which means "height of Preu", Preu is a place name). Our extraction site is approx. 300 meters by 100 meters and we are at a depth of +/- 50 - 60 meters. The quarry is at a 2 km distance from our Atelier.
We need to extract approx. 2 tons of rocks to have 1 kg usable Coticule.

Main view on our quarry right after the winter of... [Read More]
