Don't ditch the game for that reason, ditch the players. D&D can attract them though.

Apples to Apples is a great game and loads of fun when you're around people that aren't big gamers. I also like Tigris and Euphrates, Puerto Rico. I'm also a fan of CheapassGames. The idea behind CheapassGames is that everyone has a ton of board game pieces and boardgame money that they never play with or use (see: Monopoly), so the game doesn't include pieces or money that you might have already, thus being extremely cheap.
Anyone play Mahjong? And I'm not talking about the solitare matching game, I'm talking about the the real, four player game.

Thanks for the links, marosell. Especially to Cheapass.
I can't believe I forgot to mention one of my most favourite board games ever,
Civilization, and for me the inclusion of the expansion Advanced Civilization makes it totally awesome! Commodities trading is really the heart of the game. You must trade at least three items in any one trade, but you only have to tell the truth about two of them.

No serious board gamer shouldn't at least have a few games of Civ. under his belt.
