Honing Out a Chip and Hone Wear

Is it automatic that you'll cause some noticeable, if not significant, hone wear on the spine when you hone out a chip on a razor's edge? I've been experimenting and I've had trouble minimizing the hone wear. I recognize that tape could be used but I'm not a fan of using tape with Friodurs.

Not meaning to be rude, but I have to ask. How else will you protect the spine?

I also understand that Friodors are a difficult breed, extra hard steel I believe. I think it was gssixgun on another thread that dealt with these , maybe Glen will be in soon. If not you might wish to PM .

You can use tape on the spine until the chip and damage is removed and then re-set the bevel without tape using the permanent marker test to minimize the hone wear and allow for future touch ups without tape. This is the best method that I have found.

I've always honed out chips by lifting the spine off the hone. It's like sharpening woodcarving tools. Once the chip is gone, I go back to honing regularly.

Exactly what I do. Also the same with full/true wedges the first time around.

That works too , but then it takes some (usually not a whole lot of) hone wear to re-set the bevel to the correct angle with the spine laying on the hone. Same as using tape.

Thats is worse than using tape, because the offset you're creating with tape is smaller than the offset of holding up the spine.

Also how can ensure that when your holding up the spine the angle isn't constantly changing as you hone?

It's a fair point but I have a long history of honing woodcarving chisels. I have gained the muscle memory to keep a straight razor stable at an angle. That being said, I certainly don't recommend this approach. Eventually, I'll come over to the electrical tape side.
