Rugged or squared?
Just want to get an idea of who likes what, when it comes to natural Japanese hones.
Ones that have been squared up and look machined, or the rugged ones that are odd shaped, still have the skin attached and look awesome and natural.
Personally I like the rugged ones, that look more natural, you know, not all machine cut.

I think the squared is easier for a new honer to use, and it's just as natural as the rugged
I'm just not very fashion conscious I guess Maybe Mark could help me out here

I don't remember who got it, but that "rugged" triangular stone that someone bought here was truly amazing. I was super jealous when it was bought...

I like the more naturally shaped stones. But not because they are stylish or fashionable, I like them because it means less waste of perfectly good stone. JMS's little triangular stone would be reduced to a pile of naguras if it got machined into perfect squares/rectangles.
Same reason behind the Belgians selling Bouts as well as machined stones. All you need is a flat surface on top, the sides don't matter at all.

They look nice rugged, but for use I like a nice long and even rectangle.

I like rugged, mostly due to looks, but if it was shaped into a rectangle the cost would go up due to machining and there would be a great loss of such beautiful and (so i have heard) fantastic hones. Thats just my cent and a half

Rugged or squared matters not to me, I just WANT one! No, I don't WANT one, I NEED one.

To my mind the only advantage for a hone to have even or straight, smooth edges is the ease with which the corners can be chamfered or rounded or "eased". Whether that makes a great deal of difference, I'm not sure, but it does ease my mind; amateur honer that I am, I'm comforted by that.

I like the look of a rugged bottom, and hand sawn sides.
But I also like my stones to be rectangular. The japanese themselves also value the 'rectangularness' of the stone, I was told.
