Scottish Hones on ebay
Did anyone see the recent "Scotch" hones on ebay?
The usual Water of Ayr, Dalmore Blue and Tam O'Shanter.
But,but !! Red Bay fast hone, Dalmore Yellow and some great combo's too.
I'm sorry I waited till the auctions had finished as one of the guys here is very keen to get his hands on one of them, so I thought I should give him some space.
Here they were
Honing Stone -Scotch Dual Grit MIB - Blue & Yellow on eBay, also Knife Sharpening, Knives Cutters, Hand Tools, Business, Office Industrial (end time 28-Sep-08 21:50:49 BST)
Honing Stone -Scotch Dalmore Blue MIB - SDB on eBay, also Knife Sharpening, Knives Cutters, Hand Tools, Business, Office Industrial (end time 28-Sep-08 21:50:19 BST)
Honing Stone -Scotch Dalmore Yellow MIB - SDY on eBay, also Knife Sharpening, Knives Cutters, Hand Tools, Business, Office Industrial (end time 28-Sep-08 21:44:49 BST)
Honing Stone - Red Bay Oil Stone Hone MIB - Fast Cut on eBay, also Knife Sharpening, Knives Cutters, Hand Tools, Business, Office Industrial (end time 28-Sep-08 21:41:58 BST)
Razor Honing Stone - Water of Ayr WOA Scotch Hone MIB on eBay, also, Barber Shop Shaving, Vanity Perfume Grooming, Collectables (end time 28-Sep-08 21:34:24 BST)
Knife Honing Stone - Tam O'Shanter Scotch Hone MIB on eBay, also, Accessories, Knives Swords, Collectables (end time 28-Sep-08 21:32:25 BST)
6 interesting hones there. One or two went for a bit too much some attracted no interest

I saw them and was going to snipe the WOA combo but I work on Sunday and I was in the middle of doing a tattoo on a customer when the auction ended. I know they are scarce but I would rather get a single grit that a combo anyway. They made more then one so if I live long enough another will come around. In the meanwhile if anyone has a large single grit Water Of Ayr stone to sell I am a buyer.

Thanks for keeping it under wraps and for the initial tip, Marcus. I snagged a Dalmore Blue/Yellow combo but set my snipe sites too low on the Water of Ayr/Tam combo. I saw Randy Tuttle at a gun/knife show on Saturday and he was already aware of the Water of Ayr and was going to be bidding on it too. I haven't heard if he was the winner.
Unlike Jimmy , I would be perfectly happy with a Water of Ayr/Tam combo. If I found one of those I'd probably consider even selling my full Tam since I'd never wear out the combo in my lifetime.
My goal is to acquire (phrase coined by me): "The 4 Scottsman" Tam, Dalmore Blue, Dalmore Yellow, Water of Ayr.

Bummer, I didn't even see that one. Make it the 5 Scottsman. I see on the label is says oil or water. It looks like a swirled Dalmore Blue but only in red color. Nice!

I'll give a report. Really though, thanks for alerting us to this. My HAD requires that I have the other 2 of the 5 known Scottish stones now.

How do these Scottish hones compair to other hones? I'd be quite interested in getting hold of some in the future, so would be great to hear how good they are.

As most interesting listings from the USA end in the middle of the night I always use an auction sniper. I can recommend Gixen: it is free, at 6 USD a year you can have Gixen mirror that snipes for you in case one server crashes.

Steven, so far I can only comment on the rather beautiful Tam O' Shanter hone since that's the only one I currently own. It's a great stone to work with. I use mine with slurry as I believe most others do. I would definitely do a search about Tam O' Shanter or Tam on SRP. You'll read about how some have reported that it excels at working with razors that are prone to micro-chipping, etc. It's also known as Snakestone.

I have a Tam & a Dalmore Blue. When I use that pair I start with the Blue which the general consensus finds to be the equivalent of the Norton 4k. I then go to the Tam with slurry and then the Tam without slurry.
Here is a quote from Joe Chandler in another post," In comparison to my natural stones, let me put it this way...I won't be getting rid of my Tam O' Shanters or Dalmores, coticule or Eschers...some razors respond better to the slower, softer cutting actions of these stones, and they remain a valuable part of my arsenal of honing stuff. Wackers, for instance, because they're so hard and "chippy" seem to love the TOS's. It cuts and hones without microchipping, which I had a lot of problems with on other, more agressive hones".
