Default Bay Rum Parade "AtC"

I decided to bring this thread back to life finally "After the Crash":
This is the Bay Rum Parade!!!!

I will break this down into three groups, The basic Alcohol and scent, The ones with some type of conditioners added, will be in the second group, and lastly the third group, will be made up of Bay Rum's that actually are made out of Rum!!!!
I don't think that my opinion would mean much when it comes to rating the scent. One, I love Bay Rum, period, as you can see, I might even be called a fanatic..... Two, scent is a personal preference, so my opinion would not mean all that much to you...

In the 1st Group:
We have .....
Lucky Tiger, Gabel's, and Pinaud's Clubman....
All 3 of these are basic After Shave splashes, they are pretty much Alcohol, Water, Scent, and coloring
Is this a bad thing, not really, many of the highly rated Cologne's and After Shaves are pretty much the same thing, The scents are straight forward and uncomplicated, they also fade rather quickly, the Clubman does have some staying power in the scent department..
Price here is not a concern at all the most expensive is maybe $10 for the Clubman...

Name: 004.jpg
Views: 827
Size: 46.3 KB

The 2nd group:
Is also the largest group we have.....
Bois D' Inde, Dominica, Royall Bay Rhum, Taylor of Old Bond Street, Ogallala, and Masters.....

This group is the largest that I have tried so far, it also has the more expensive of the Bay Rum's in it...
These After Shaves all contain some type of skin conditioners in them, these include Witch hazel, Glycerin, Aloe, Real Bay oil, Clove oil, Cinnamon oil, Lemon oil, Carmel, and Menthol.....
The most expensive bottle here is the Royall the price seems to run between $36 and $54 depending on where you find it... The Royall is one of the old time scents here, I actually remember this when I was a kid and it actually had a bay leaf in the bottle, that goes back 45 years that I can remember, so if you are looking for the one that your Pop or Grand Pop used this is probably it.... The least expensive is the Master's at about $8 for that huge bottle....
These all have a little more staying power, when it comes to the scents, all of these leave the skin feeling a little softer, a little firmer, I guess the conditioners actually do work in them......

Name: 003.jpg
Views: 829
Size: 58.4 KB

The 3rd Group:
We Have.....
Capt Smith's and SB (Sensuous Beauty)
These two, are the only ones that I have found so far, that actually say "made with rum" on the label.. These both have various additives, that mostly include fruit and spice infusions...
They're both are fantastic skin conditioners, BUT I will warn you about the Cap't.... This Bay Rum is probably the best conditioner, the scent is well lived, but when it hits your face, your expression will resemble Macaulay Culkin in "Home Alone" this AS, burns like the fires of hell at first, then leaves you with soft, tight, skin when the fires subside...... Both of these can be had at less than $20 shipped.....

Name: 002.jpg

Size: 42.9 KB

Please feel free to add any Bay Rum's that you have tried to this review... If possible let us know what group it would be in, and post a pic, and price range....

Hi Glen, thats quite a selection of bay rum you have there... is there a type that you DON'T have?

I have zero experience with Bay Rum, which rendition would you suggest for a newbie that retails for less than $20... also, which one is your absolute favorite?

Thanks,

Justin

I would recommend the Capt Smith's Caribbean regardless of price at this point, but it should be less than $20 shipped....I would only recommend this because I think it gives a good all around Bay Rum experience, watch the burn though if you have sensitive skin....
I really don't have a favorite myself, I really do like them all!!!!
I have heard that there is one made by Pusser's that I would like to try soon...

Default Bay Rum

Great review, answered a lot of questions I had about some of the other brands. I have the Pinaud Clubman line and the only thing I dont like about it is the cheap plastic bottle it comes in. My wife on the other hand, does not like it AT ALL. So, I wear it on work days. Still looking for seme glycerin to add to it...

w12,

Another one which I like is the Taylor of Old Bond Street Bay Rum: it comes in a plastic bottle, always nice in the shave den with those hard floors, and it comes with a pin-hole stopper in the neck of the bottle so you don't pour out the entire contents with a carelessly tipped splash, and it smells good, and it seems to have some "slipperyizer" in it so it isn't quite as astringent as some of the other Bay Rums, and it's arome even can be smelled on ones wetted face 12 hours after it was applied, and it costs $12.99 from Classic (sans shipping).

How's that for a sentence?

I also have the TOBS Bay Rum and like it.
I just ordered some of the Captain's Bay
Rum and am looking forward to using it. My
wife hates the smell of it, but I like it, so
there!

I'm also a bay rum addict..er..fan going back about 20 years or so.

Didn't see Caswell-Massey Michelson's Bay Rum in your grouping. It is one of my alltime favorite bay rums. Very warm, rich and spicey. Caswell claims some orange in the mix and I think I dectect it along with unmistakeable Pimenta Racemosa (Carribean Bay).

I've read others reviews on it, some claiming that the scent doesn't last very long, but I've found that it lasts all day. Not overpowering as some modern fragrances, but I still catch subtle whiffs of it even at the end a hard days work.

One of the more pricey bay rums, but good stuff.

I think the second group is most appropriate. Can't remember all the ingredients (they were listed on the box, now long gone) but it is certainly a high end bay rum.

Oh, and I thought I'd ask while we're on the subject, something about Pinaud's bay rum.

I have a general fondness for all Pinaud aftershaves (yeah, even Lilac Vegetal). The appeal is partly due to their history and tradition (the pricing doesn't hurt either). But I notice in many of their aftershaves, especially in the bay rum, a rather funky, almost skunky note. I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this, or maybe it's jusy my olfaction?

Sorry if this slightly your thread....

Scott

hon'd,

I don't pick that element up. There seems to be a very strong clove element, but there is nothing in the scent which is off-putting to me. And for about 6 bucks a bottle I think its fragrance is very on-putting.

Yep and it just went on the list of gotta try LOL
Thanks for posting Rusty
Reading the link it looks as thought it might actually go in group 3, the sugar cane reference, could mean a real rum base on that one, which moves it to the top of my list automatically......

Default Superior 70 Bay Rum

Superior 70 bay rum is the real-deal, folks. It appears to have only alcohol and bay leaf oil, and it smells like it... I grew up in Bermuda, and had the pleasure of knowing what we called "spice tree" leaves.

This is a very authentic smelling product, and cheap too! $1.89 for 11.8 fl oz bottle at Walgreens in East Boston. Cha-ching!

Then this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the jack of spades jump out of this brand-new deck of cards and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, do not accept this bet, because as sure as you stand there, you're going to wind up with an ear full of cider.

After making my own, I doubt I'm going to buy anymore. I really like mine. Thanks you guys on this forum. I've concocted my own *secret* recipe. And I like making my own. The more I add to the rum, the more room I "have" to make in the bottle.

This is my small collection of Bay Rums. I think the Ogallala Bay Rum & Sandalwood is excellent. Mama Bear made me up a Bay Rum Aftershave Summer Milk that I like also.

Long lasting scent and feels good on the skin... This one is also a little pricey for a bay rum at $35 a bottle....
