Default Witch Hazel...do you use it?

Hey all,

I've seen a number of people using Witch Hazel in the SOTD pictures. This works well for toning the skin and controlling irritation? And do you use it in place of an aftershave, or along with?

Thanks for the feedback!

If I need an after shave I'll use witch hazel, works just fine.

Witch hazel first, cool (not cold) water rinse, pat dry, lastly aftershave = my current ritual.

I don't like it. Opened the first and only bottle this morning and it does nothing for me no scent no cooler than just spashing cold water on your face which is free. Witch hazel gets the thumbs down from me. Use an after shave balm or after shave instead. Just my thoughts on it. You asked I answered.

I blend WH with AS 1:1 and then add 8-10 drops of glycerin to every 4 oz of this mixture. The perfect aftershave treatment for me.

I use witch hazel and when it's fully dry on my face I use
aftershave.

i use it and love it. no aftershave only WH.

shave - cold rinse - pat dry .... then i clean the razor, sink.. this gives my face 1min to finish drying. at this point i can feel it becoming dry. this is when i use a spritzer bottle with WH and spritz the face and neck. thats it, im done. no AS. works great every time.

try a different WH. i think most people use the Thayer's Non-Alcoholic type. it can be found in healthfood stores/GNC. it comes in unscented, lavender, and rose. by the way, i use the rose. its not strong but very nice and subtle.

Same here. Cuts the scent of my AS a tad (it is a strong scent) and makes it last longer!

I use the kind with aloe vera in it and it works great. I don't know
if they all have it, but the one I use is Thayer's Medicated Superhazel
with Aloe Vera.

I have a bottle of Thayer's WH with Aloe, and to be honest, I can't tell any difference between the times I use it and the times I don't. Of course--as can be seen from the above-noted posts--YMMV.

It also comes in a Lemon scent that is a nice complement to Lime shaving creames and other lime products like Lime Face Food.

zI have a bottle of Proraso A/S splash that contains witch hazel and while I think its a great aftershave, I don't really think it is spectacular or that the witch hazel contributes much. A store in my neighborhood has a special on Thayer's (the whole line) for $5.99 so I will probably end up picking up a bottle just for the hell of it.

The stuff from the drug store smells a little better than cat pee. I only use it if i need too.

I used to use it when I first started wet shaving.

Now I just use an alum block in my regimen.
Apply alum block.

Clean my razor & sink while I let my face rest.

Splash cold water on my face.

Pat dry.

Apply A/S.

I use witch hazel now and again although not so much as an aftershave but along with it. I usually shave before showering and I will always use the witch hazel then for its toning properties. Afterwards I will shower and use the aftershave of my choice once I dry off.

I mix witch hazel into my aftershave balm. A few months ago I got tired of no one having an aftershave balm in the scent I wanted. Now I buy the cosmetic base (body milk), then mix it with witch hazel, cornhuster's lotion, rose water, (sometimes lavender water), then scent it with essential oils myslef. I almost have Colleen's Orange Patchouli shaving cream scent duplicated, so it matches my aftershave balm. It works out great. The aftershave balm has all the properties to meet the requirements of my skin. It is scented the way I want it, and it only cost me about $5 to make a 5 month supply.

I find that ice cold water makes a great aftershave, followed by ZIRH "Soothe" balm. There is no need to put anything that "stings" on your face.....like witch hazel or alcohol. All that does is irritate.

But the sting feels so good!

I am noticing that witch hazel does a good job at tightening up the face.
