When do you use the Alum block????
A good question arose the other night in chat....
Do you use the Alum before a cold water rinse or after the cold water rinse????
Just a simple quick poll here...

I use it after the cold water rinse. Then I can rub the moistened block on my face and neck then....
I rub one side of the moistened block under my left arm pit; then back on the face on the non-arm pitted side of the block to re-wet the block, then....rub that side under the right arm pit.
Then I'm good to go.
I know, I know, all you guys are saying: "Note to self"....Don't buy any used alum block from Chris L".

After, but...
the only reason is that I figure the stuff would get partially rinsed off if I used it before the cold water rinse. Has to be on face to do anything right? I pat dry after my CWR and then wet the block and go at it.

I have been using pre CWR. Not sure why, but that's what I do. Maybe I'll try post and see how it feels.

I just received a block of it from a large-ish buy on B&B from a guy who was quitting wet shaving, but I haven't used it yet. Do you guys use it instead of AS or just use it before applying the AS?

a guy quitting wetshaving? wow, I hope I'm never forced to do this
Alum goes a/r 1st CWR and then I do a 2nd CWR a/r the alum. Don't fancy it staying on my face, and I believe it closes the pores on contact, more or less
Cheers
Ivo

When I do use the block, I use it after CWR and prior to AS. I like to use it when I have a balm day like today. Those days are few, I prefer an alcohol splash. It tightens up my face better, if that makes any sense to anyone. The alum does an adequate job of replacing the alcohol's ability to "tighten".
Long live Aqua Velva!

That's exactly what I do as well. CWR to wash face of lather etc. Then alum. Then another CWR to remove alum, and ASB to finish. I usually clear up and strop between Aum and CWR#2 to let the alum do its stuff.

Idon't do a cold water rinse. I put the alum on right after I rinse off the excess lather but I don't use cold water. Then I let the alum dry on then I wipe with my damp towel add aftershave with scent and go.
Cold water rinse= masochists?

I don't know what an alum block is but if I did, and if I had one and if I did a cold water rinse, I'd probably use it in a manner that would be considered customary and reasonable, or nearly so.
I hope I don't find out what the alum block is noy why it is used because I will likely fall into the same trap as I do with the rest of this wet shaving stuff and then I'd get a bad ABAD.

When I put this up for a poll, I didn't post how I used the Alum, I figured now I would and the reason why I use it this way....
I finish my shave with a hot water rinse, then use the Alum bar, this gives me instant feedback on how smooth my shave actually was, lots of stinging, too much pressure, etc: etc:
I leave the Alum on my face as I clean up the shave den, then do a cold water splash/rinse, pat dry, and apply the AS of the day....
This leaves nice, tight, smooth, skin after the shave, and as all of us would agree, Tight & Smooth is much nicer.... (Oh that was Soooooooooo bad on Soooooooo many levels)

One of these days in your travels, a guy is going to show you a brand-new deck of cards on which the seal is not yet broken. Then this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the jack of spades jump out of this brand-new deck of cards and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, do not accept this bet, because as sure as you stand there, you're going to wind up with an ear full of cider.
