Truly Crappy Bay Rums
I had no idea there were so many Bay Rums. Never having used Bay Rum I always thought there was only one. You know, like Aramis, Drakkar Noir, Old Spice and Bay Rum. But NOOOOOOO! There are many of these concoctions and they are all supposed to come from the Carribean islands but I have a sneaking suspicion that a great many of these bottles are filled directly from the ***** of a horse. Now the horse may be in the West Indies but the stuff in these bottles is still horse ****:

I know the like or dislike of a fragrance is a very subjective thing. However these Bay Rums are al alcohol, water and fragrant stuff. They all burn like Hell when applied to a freshly shaven face and the scent is gone the instant the alcohol evaporates. Does anyone have any crappy concoctions they'd like to list here in this thread of warning to those who don't want to drop any money on inferior products? Or maybe someone wants to speak up in defence of one or more of these (the Dominican Lime may have some supporters).

interesting the only one there i have tried is the Dominica and it smells great! i think gssixgun has a thread on bay rums laying about in the review section.
my favorite bay rum is from Taylors though
the alcohol burn is probably from too much pressure when you shave... these products should all have a nice cooling sensation as the alcohol evaporates...
the citrocol ... is a lime a/s so it should not smell like bay rum...

Note this Dominica is lime and it is quite different than the non-lime Dominica. Yes gssixgun did a very informative thread singing the praises of various Bay Rums. Here I am offering warnings on what after shave type products can be considered a waste of money.
Oh yeah, notice the label on the Citrocol says it comes from the St. Lucia Bay Rum Company. That's Bay Rummy enough for me to include it here.

Oh Blasphemy!!!!
But I do detect a pattern here....
And I suggest that next time, you make sure the horse has not been wandering about the lime grove.....

The Dominica is a great product that I use on a regular basis. You will find that its well thought of by many here.

I like the smell of the Dominica, sans lime too. I also like the smell of the McLas you can see in the picture but it has faded to a memory before I can get the cap back on the bottle and for my money that is crappy.

aftershaves are not the same as colognes the scent doesn't stay strong . Perhaps you should look into colognes.

Scent is a personal thing so I couldn't help ya there, if you like the Bay Rum scent in general and you are looking for a longer lasting one I would recommend the Capt. Smith's, Ogalalla, or the Clubman brands...
These will never last as long as say Drakkar or any other cologne, just because they are AS's not cologne's...
They are basically 2 types of bay rums to my nose
The Island style which most fall into this category, and the what I call the Cowboy or Western style....
the Island style is a crisp clean scent like Dominica, Royall, Pusser's etc:
The Western is a heavier more clove scent like the Ogalalla
Personally I haven,t met a Bay Rum I don't like, but thats just me, there are some I like better than others....but to tell you what my nose likes does no good whatsoever.
The Royall is the standard in my eyes, probably because I remember buying that stuff for my pops for at least the last 45 years, that and Old spice were his AS of choice....

Hey Glen, I'm glad you chimed in. It was your thread that started my collecting of Bay Rums. Sadly it seems a large percentage of the ones I've collected are crappy. I thought I would start a thread with a humorous flavor regarding my poor selections. Fortunately these things are generally inexpensive so an obscure label on a bottle of equine urine may only cost $5. Be that as it may, it still ****. The defensive attitude of some folks regarding a cheap blend of alcohol, water and fragrance is amusing. I never thought that by bad mouthing Dominica I'd be treading on thin ice. Sure they mostly smell nice but why can't these scents last longer? Why aren't there Bay Rum colognes? Why aren't there cologne.after shave combination fluids?
I have to return to the original thread to make a list of the "better" Bay Rums and begin a search in earnest for those better blends and eschew the crappy ones. Of course we are all individuals and our personal preferences will vary. However, I'm with you on the Royall. That stuff seems to be different, maybe because it was so expensive I want it to be better. Maybe the leaf in the bottle has me fooled. Any way, I like how it feels and it seems to last a bit longer than some others. But praising a favorite is not the purpose of this thread. What we should be doing here is trashing the trashy ones. I am inviting griping. Come on you whiney bugs let us feel your disappointment!

Ah there are bay rum colognes, at least one that I know of. C.O. Bigelow makes a nice bay rum aftershave balm and cologne, available at bath & body works I think is where I got mine. The scent lasts a pretty long time and I enjoy the scent, it's a spicy bay rum scent ... and if you get the cologne you can use that as well with it and smell like the stuff longer. I have yet to use the cologne though I have it. Not as cheap as the other stuff though, the aftershave is about $20 and cologne $40.
It seems from most of the women that I've heard chime in somewhere on bay rum the consensus is they generally don't like it .. not sure how well that would hold up though as I've only heard opinions of a few. I know bay rum is probably my favorite scent of soap/cream/aftershave so far and it seems a lot of other guys also like it.
Edit: Available here as well, looks like they also have a body wash for the real bay rum enthusiast.

Funny you should say that. The worst thing possible just happened last night. My girlfriend found that she likes the ones I don't like and wants to use them! Luckily the smell doesn't last.

Hmm, I like the Capt Smith but maybe I'll have to try the Dominica. Just noticed you are almost my neighbor, I am in Oceanside and go to Ramona on occasion to chase some cows with my horse.

I want to chime in here .... I LOVE Bay Rum, I have a decent collection of them now. Among my everyday rotation I have Ogalalla,
Dominica, Captain Smith, and a bottle I got from a place call the
Old Village Barber Shop (I think they are in N.H.). The O.V.B.S has a Bay Rum deodorant that i LOVE!!!
But back to the subject at hand...
I think that the brand "Masters" Bay Rum is the most VILE smell I have ever tried ... I think it is from the same stream as the products you have described.
I know Masters has a following... but I don't understand why.
Just my 2 cents.....
Steve

Keep in mind when you go into one of those fru-fru expensive botiques and buy some imported or other after shave or cologne for the big bucks the stuff is made of alcohol, water and fragrance just like the cheap stuff just that it smells better to some.
By the way I think Dominica bay Rum smells great and anyone who dares knock old spice deserves to be executed.

I love Bay Rum. I like the post that there are crisp Island versions and clovey versions = I hadn't been able to articulate that in my own mind. Of those I've tried
1. Domenica - love it. [island]
2. Pinaud - love it. [island]
3. Ogallalah - love the old clovey version, new spicier version is ok, I have mixed feelings about the BR/Sandlewood and BR/LemonPeppercor
4. HoneyBeeGardens [clovey] - love it - it's slid under the radar
Old Spice Rocks.

Hey great but this isn't about what bay rums you love. This thread is about the bay rums that suck, like Master's or the Dominica with lime.
