Naw, it ain't an import restriction but rather a zealot like adherence to international postal regulations by Customs Canada if they inspect the package. Alcohol is considered under international postal regulations to be hazardous goods and is prohibited from being placed in the mail. The fact that most countries now ignore that or have made accommodation's for it in their regulations, considering all the advancements in the transportation industry, this seems to have had little effect on our "Stand on guard for thee" customs officers.
As for a solution, Vintage Blades LLC handles the issue by using UPS and a special import system to Canada. Vintage Blades bills you for the GST and shipping including a reduced amount for brokerage and in return UPS simply plunks the package on your doorstep, no ransom notes or anything else. The Gentlemans Shop in Hungerford, UK has a similar deal with FedEx or some such if I recall correctly as they had so many confiscations by Canada Customs that they had to cancel shipments of such products to Canada for a while.
There are dealers in the US that will ship to Canada without specifically mentioning such products on the customs label but if the package is opened for inspection, such items will be removed and destroyed....
So... there you go, we're up the creek and we're flat out of paddles. I have bent the ear of several higher up postal officials about this (I work for CPC) but their ears appear deaf to such concerns.
Tryphon has a bunch of products I'd kill to get but I'm not risking having it shipped to Canada. I'll end up having it sent to a mail service just across the US border, as soon as the package arrives there, they give me a call in Winnipeg and I scoot down there (about a 1hr drive) and pick it up and carry it across the border myself paying the pst/gst as per normal. It's not worth it for a $10 bottle of aftershave but I plan to order a couple hundred dollars worth and spread the cheer a bit... might just have some shoes sent there as well, they are way cheaper across the border.
Hope this helps.
