Rare and Collectable???
Am I missing something? Is this really worth over $300?
I wonder if the fact that the seller put in a starting price of $99 set off a misperception of its value and set up a bidding war. On the bight side, if I am wrong and this thing is actually so valuable, anyone else can still jump in on the bidding with 8 days left!

Just because it's shaped and stamped like a razor hone, I would even question whether the grit on either side is even fine enough for a razor.
I got burned (nobody's fault but mine) buying what I thought was a grime covered coticule combo about 3 months ago. It turned out to be a worthless dime a dozen coarse and coarser stinky manufactured aluminum oxide oilstone.

A real mind blower. OTOH there are three individual bidders and the seller says it is popular with ax men. Could this be the Australian ax man's equivalent of an Escher yellow/green with label?

Yes, basically it is. As an Aussie ax man from way back, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that that sucker has not even gone for half what it is worth.
When you are out there, face to face with a thousand hectares of old growth forest, and the buggers are coming at you left, right and centre, the only thing between the old ax man and a nasty scratch or a twig in the eye is his trusty ax, sharpened on the good old norton stone.
Those stones saw me through hell and back gentlemen. Hell and back.

I've cut down trees with an ax and I've cut down trees with a chainsaw. No matter what hone I could use to get my ax to whatever degree of sharpness possible, I'm gonna pick the chainsaw. BTW, Jimbo, I have yet to have a tree come at me at all. You must have really ticked them off.
If this hone is so great for the ax, why did he list it in the razor section? Could it be...? I've seen people shave with knives, I wanna see an ax shave!

Sort of like when the Escher has the end label stating color and is worth an extra hundred bucks ?

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure those who are asserting the value of the item are being sarcastic. At least that's how it came across to me.
In my opinion, the high price is equivelant to the insane prices overly large razors, razors with masonic etchings, and pristine Ducks seem to draw. They are overhyped collectors items, and nothing more. If people have the money and choose to spend it that way, I have no problem with that. Though knowing that some of those razors will sit unused in glass cases often makes me shed a tear.

I politely emailed the seller and asked him about the hone. According to him, they are in fact extremely popular with ax-men, particularly in the US, and he expects the final bid to be double its current $300.
So if any of you have such a hone in your stone junk pile, you might want to dig it out and unload it!

Yeah - even though I was tongue-in-cheek in my previous post, I have seen those stones go for some serious money before, especially to the wood chopping fraternity. Those guys are almost as fanatical as we are.

HUGE +1 on that one. "Note to self: Keep a keen eye out for what looks like a Norton barber hone and buy it immediately for Ebay sale".
I could give a rip about a Norton stone like that, but man, think of all the razor spending money one would bring!
Don't tell those ax-men about all the different barber hones we use, the prices of them may then go through the roof. Wait, TELL them! I've got too many as it is.

really? you have never heard of a tree coming at someone?
Why just the other day my wife's friend was in a car wreck and see said she was just driving along minding her own business when this tree just came jumping out in front of her car. Too bad she didn't have an axe.

It is suspected the razor is haunted.

Every time I see a duck sell for well in excess of $100 I think back to the video Lynn put out years ago where he says that the duck was his favourite razor. I always wonder just how much of it's value was due to those words he innocently uttered...

Overhyped--maybe, but I'd rather pay $100 for a pristine old duck than any new razor you could get for $100.

Oh, don't get me wrong- they are an excellent razor. I actually own 3 of the little suckers (2 in good shape and one that is among the best shavers but whose blade had been honed down to 3/8 or so.) I am not going to sat that they are not worth the money- only that there are razors equally as good that sell for a fraction of the price of a DD.
I was just musing out loud that if it were not for that one mention on a video watched by nearly every new straight razor shaver I question if they would be fetching the price that they are.

yeah, i think that's why lynn stopped naming brands. he does mention dorko in the first webcast, but these are fairly rare and are already spendy.
as far as the hone, i've seen this stuff before, but didn't think it's that sought after. I thought 100 is the crazy price they get sold for, but i guess it's not.
