Oh So, if my stone is indeed 12 inches X 4 inches and is a reasonable quality Belgian Natural Combo, it is worth more than $500 (or whatever someone is willing to pay)
Oh! M

I think you've nailed it there, Marcus. That's what it all boils down to.

$500 would be a reasonable price if you cut it into 4 6"x2" stones.
Given it's, likely extreme, rarity, if interested in selling it you should put a reserve of at least that much, probably more.
The trick in selling it would be finding several people who have plenty of cash at the time, and really want such a unique hone.

It is actualy generaly a little more than what ever the second highest bidding person is willing to pay if sold at an auction.
The trick would be finding the right group to auction it to.
For something like that Ebay could be very hit or miss.

I'm going to try to keep it for now, don't tell the wife for Gods sake.
If I can sell my other Belgian stones for most of it's cost, I may be able to placate her.
Again though, whats the biggest chunks any of you have heard off?

I seem to remember seeing a piece about that big in a video of how they mine the stones. There was a clip of a guy that was cutting large chunks down to regular sized hones. If I'm not mistaken.
So it may not be rare per se, just rarely found in that condition outside the mine's workshop. Someone should call Ardennes and ask what it'd cost to have one specially cut to that size.

I guess I'm a bit late to the thread - you should post in show&tell when you get it. I have a 10"x2" glued combo in a box that you can find pictures of. It is most certainly a lot more hone than one needs, but it's nice regardless.
Congratulations on the nice score, I'm glad its not mine as I already have plenty of hones I seem to be very attached to...
And Russel is correct, I always think that the sizes are what the market wanted. I guess now we know who had use for the large ones. It's certainly not much money for a business. Finding a private buyer may not be easy, but again may be Howard has contacts who may be interested. Ebay is hit and miss - most people go there only occasionally, so if you list there a reserve is essential.

The sizes are a combination of what the market wants and what the stone can be shaped to. There is a reason why there are bouts available, and it is not really that the market wants oddly shaped peices of stone.
Now the stone to make such a large hone might be relatively common, or it might be quite rare to find a natural vein that is of sufficeint quality over an area that size.

If that sucker was used for microscopy, I want to see the microtome!
I have an obvious solution to the question of what to do with such a big stone--two handed, two razor, simultaneous honing. Just think of all the time you'll save!

It's just arrived, it is ridiculous!
Two people could hone on it!
It is 12 inches long, a Gnats testicle under 4 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches thick.
The yellow vein varies between 1/2 and 3/4 of an inch the Blue side the difference.
The box is really nice. The hone is unused.
It is ridiculous, you could build muscles lifting it !
I think it is a geology exhibit or something like that, it's ridiculous..Have I said that?
Just wet the top (lucky I'm not on a water meter)
It is beautiful, some light salmon pink spots to it.
I gave a Gotta a couple of swipes on it, seems verry good.
Here it is - The picture does not illustrate the size of very well (or the weight)

I did laugh when it arrived, I imagined finding a house name on the blue side, If I used it as my memorial, I could do a public service!? Everyone could use my burial site a hone
I could have -
' Here lies the bones of Marcus, his razor once was sharp, now he's swaped his honing stone for an Angels harp,
- chisled on it

Just to illustrate
Thats not a rubbing stone, that is a 30x125 selected coticule on top!
Rob Cellis says that "the waxy stuff filling the cracks in the blue side is bees wax and wood glue, stones were cut in non-metric sizes for export to the UK and US, and thesedays, stones of these dimentions are rare"!

Hi, It's 3.542 kg
That measurment is spot on, the PO's scales are accurate.
Should have seen the strange looks I got in the PO.
BTW, I may have found another one - I'm not sure of the exact size yet but the box is the same wood made in exactly the same way!! I mean exactly..............
