Default Benefits of the X Pattern

I'm sure this question has been answered numerous times, but I can't seem to track it down through the search. I know that an X pattern must be used for honing and stropping if the stone/strop is less than the width of the razor, but what are the other benefits. For the sake of this discussion, let's say one had hones/strop that were all as wide as the razor. What benefit would the X pattern bring in this situation. Would it even be necessary? Thanks in advance...I'm learning quickly that replies are very quick to come and very helpful around here.
