Default How long until you hone?

Just curious, What is the amount of time you guys wait to hone your razor. Not just touchups but a full honing.

I bought a new Dovo stainless in 1980 and never did anything but touch-ups until this year, when I sent it to moveimaniac for repinning and honing. If a razor is shave ready, it will never need anything but touch-ups unless it is damaged. eBay razors are another story and that's where you get into the heavy bevel-setting on the lower grit hones.

Once I have a razor that has a bevel set then it goes back to the hone about every 4 months for what I would consider a tough up. I am partially resetting the bevel and doing about 15 laps on a DMT8EE. I use pastes which tend to round the bevel a bit. This is just a ballpark because it depends on the quality of the steel and what kind of grind razor you are talking about. When a razor will not hold an edge for over about 6 days then it is time for a re-hone.

Take Care,
Richard

It's time to rehone my wapi. I estimate that it gave me between 75 and 100 shaves receiving pasted strop treatment from time to time

I think that will improve as my shaving improves

I agree if you use hones to do the work, as long as you don't let things go too far and there are no mishaps I don't see why you would need anything other than a touchup. Pastes sharpen differently and eventually you will need to go to a hone for the full treatment.

Sparks, Nevada Police report last night Homer La Fong Died while shaving with his straight razor. His wife reported he was using his Iwasaki Razor and while shaving his neck it just seemed to have a mind of its own and came to life and cut his throat. Subsequent investigation revealed the razor belonged to Toshiro Kawasaki a WWll Kamakazee pilot who was killed when his plane slammed into the USS Yorktown. His last act was to shave with that razor. It is suspected the razor is haunted.
