I have an old razor that just won't dial in no matter what I do so I thought I'd try the tape on the spine trick and see if maybe the problem is that the spine has been ground down too much and I'm not getting the proper angle.

I've never used tape before and I was wondering what's the best way to deal with the tape residue left on the razor when the honing is done. I'm assuming you don't just rip off the tape and start stropping.

I use WD-40 sprayed on a piece of TP it works wonders, and so far after some 500+ razors it has never harmed a set of scales....

There shouldn't be much residue, I find a quick rub with a towel (pinch the spine with a towel between your thumb and index finger) removes it just fine.

Probably depends on the brand of tape used, mine is some off brand, maybe 3M leaves more residue.

i use goo b gone for stubborn adhesive it works well but w-d 40 is better i think

I wouldn't want WD-40 on the blade I'm about to shave with. You could try removing the residue with a new piece of tape; just dab the adhesive side against the residue a few times, which should come off the blade and stick to the tape.
