Custom scuttle
I have to brag. I've already posted this at B&B, but it's too good not to share.
I found a local potter who was willing to hear my ideas about scuttles and was willing to attempt to make one for me. She enjoyed the project so much that she may even make more. We discussed possible changes, such as notching the inner bowl to make it more secure, but that's the only design issue that I really felt was worth mentioning. The two-piece design allows for easy cleaning and gives me a separate lather bowl if I choose to use it that way.
Here's a few pictures:

I REALLY like my warm lather!

Looks nice!
The only problem I see with the two separate pieces is that it seems to me that the inner bowl will float instead of letting the water pass around its base.

All you do is push it down - the excess water goes in the sink and the two halves nest with warm water touching the upper bowl. If you have holes (like some of the antiques) it seems like you're likely to have water in your lather.

Floating hasn't really been an issue. The inner bowl is quite heavy and doesn't start to float unless I really overfill the outer container. However, I do have to push down on the inner bowl if I don't want it to rattle. Not a big deal, and it's something that the maker is willing to make changes in order to make it more usable. We discussed fusing the inner bowl to the outer, but I like that I can separate them and clean them well. I've begun making the lather in the pre-heated bowl, then putting it in the scuttle to keep the lather and brush warm.
She's definitely willing to make and sell more, but since working with pottery is a hobby and not her full-time job she's not sure how many orders she could fill, nor is she sure how much she would charge. I'm also waiting to hear from her regarding any other changes or modificaiton that she may have thought of over the weekend.

I tried t o have a student throw a scuttle like this idea on a wheel. He never did get back to me.
I'd be willing to go $40.00 plus shipping on something like this. I've wanted a two piece scuttle for sometime.

I just got an email from Gaye and figured I'd pass this on. It's being posted on the B&B forum as well.
Gaye appreciated the feedback she's received and says she's willing to let me pass on her contact information to anyone that asks.
If you'll PM or email me I'll pass on her email address and let you discuss any deals, ideas, colors, etc with her yourself. Once she feels comfortable with my posting her contact information on the forum I'll do so.
Thanks for the support, guys (and gals?). She looks forward to serving our little niche! We've just got to be patient with her since she's a one-person, part-time "shop".
Regards,
- Mark (S-4-C)

BTW....
Thought I'd mention that my latest scuttle is made of two nicely glazed square stoneware bowls stacked together (square shape doesn't flop around while making lather).
Available at WalMart for $2.75 ea. and works great.
This avoids the rough interior of the glazeless violet pots that were talked about, too.
