Moulting Vulfix
In February of this year I bought a Vulfix 2235S brush in super badger. From the start, it lost a couple of hairs every day but recently it has been shedding over a dozen a day. Yesterday I e-mailed Vulfix to express my disappointment about this. To their credit, they replied promptly and said that a new brush would be mailed to me straight away.
We shall see if the new brush behaves better when it comes, but full marks to Vulfix for their pleasant and helpful customer service at any rate.
Duncan.

The only brush I use is a Super Badger Vulfix #2234. I have used it exclusively for around five years and I don't know that it ever shed a hair! I have been VERY satisfied with it.

I'm relieved to hear that Vulfix stands behind their products. I recently purchased a Simpson PJ2 Super, and it's shedding at least 4 hairs per day. If this keeps happening, I'm going to have to ask for a replacement.
Vulfix now owns Simpsons, so it'll be interesting to see how they respond if I ask for a replacement. (My brush would have been manufactured before they took over Simpson.)
Hopefully, it won't be necessary. I love this brush, and am hoping it'll stop shedding.

An Update
Unfortunately, the replacement brush has now started losing hair at a great rate too.
Very disappointing.

Sorry to hear that: I have also a Vulfix super badger 2235 and I think it just lost one or two hairs since I'm using it. I am very satisfied with it; I don't know how you wet-dry it, but I only use hot tap water (not boiling water) and to dry it I just press slightly the bristles without pulling nor twisting, shake a few times and put to try on a stand... I don't know, maybe this will help.

Duncan, can you tell us your preshave prep of the brush? I've had Vulfix brush in best badger for 4 years now, and it has lost 5-10 hairs in total for all that time...
cheers,
Nenad

Hi
Hi,
I have an Edwin Jagger Super Bristle, had it about a year, treat it like an angel and now its shedding about five hairs a day. Its becoming a real pain. I only wash it in luke warm water, shake it over the bath ten times, gently fluff the bristles back into shape and then hang on their stand upside down.I always leave my bathroom window open so the room is well ventilated, I have no idea why an expensive brush like this should start loosing hair at this rate.
Has anyone else experienced this type of thing with the Edwin Jagger brush.
regards

Bummer, Duncan. I have used a Vulfix super badger for over a year now and I can't remember losing one hair out of it so far. From the comments of the others so far i am wondering if there is something that you are not doing correctly. Do you hang it in a brush stand after shaving?

Soak in warm water in a Victorian type scuttle, lather, shave, rinse brush in warm water, shake dry, hang upside-down in brush stand.
Nothing unusual, I would have thought.

I think the shedding thing is just a problem that develops sometimes, regardless of manufacturer. I have a fairly expensive ($90ish) brush from a good manufacturer that has shed like mad ever since I got it. I kept hoping it would taper off, but it got up to five to 10 bristles per day, and I finally contacted the manufacturer. He replaced it in a hurry, and the new brush has only lost two bristles in two months.
A Vulfix shouldn't shed like that. I had one that would lose one or two bristles a week. I'd suggest getting another replacement...

I've got a cheap medium sized Taylor of Old Bond Street dark badger brush and it seems fine. It looses a hair or two now and again, but It works great and should last a couple of years!
I suspect it was made by Vulfix.

Nearly all brand new brushes will shed a few hairs until they settle.
If you think about it, when they tap them down before sticking them in the glue, not all the hairs are going to be fully in the base. The ones that are not in the glue will eventually loosen and fall out.
It is annoying, a bit like hairs falling out of a paint brush.
So, I take a comb and comb my brush until the loose hair stops falling out. If they keep on coming, there is a fault that the glue is not holding them in place, but to date at least, I have only found it a to be a minor irritation on purchase. I've had cheap and expensive brushes and all have benefitted from a combing.
I have had to send one back that clearly had not been glued correctly. Probably a Friday brush.

I had a "bass" brush I got with my Zeepk kit... The razor was obviously worthless, but I still gave the brush a try with my old Fusion... after a couple of days the bristles ALL fell out, with a clump of glue. Beat that!
These days i'm using a merker silvertip that is wonderful!
Btw, do you peole seriously count each and every bristle that falls out of your brush? I'm sure my merker has lost a hair or 2, but I'd have no way of telling you "2 per day" or "I've owned it for 5 years and it's only lost 4.357 hairs". Just curious.

If it's only warm, not hot, than it's the manufacturer's fault. I was asking this because I've heard people using boiling water, and soaking their brushes in it.
Unless you fancy a badger hair soup, that's insane...

I have an Edwin Jagger silvertip that molts bristles every-time I use it. Very disappointed. My Kent BK2 has not lost any bristles despite being used in exactly the same way. I just think some brushes do have this problem. Waiting to see what Jagger have to say.

I have a shavemac silvertip badger and I haven't had any of the problems mentioned. In addition I have just passed my fathers brush on to my son. That brush has to be at least 40 years old and it is not shedding at all.

While I can not beat it, I am certain that anybody who ends up with a Zeepk made brush can at least match you...
I am much like you in that I do not count hairs as they fall out. I can tell you that my favourite brush (a metal handle) almost did not shed at all for two years and then a few bristles a day for two months and then it started loosing "clumps" of bristles. I threw it out and wish now that i kept the handle and bought a replacement brush to fit in it. I did not know that they were available until a few years ago when I found this forum.
