I've been looking at this brush because I've read that it is one of those best-for-the-buck brushes reviewed around these parts. Can someone tell me why it's called a "Small Shave Brush"? Is it really travel sized, and if so, why is a travel size so popular?

It's cheap for a new best badger brush. I think that's why it's their most popular.

The price of this brush make it an attractive buy for starters. If I recall correctly the knot size is around 21mm which is a smaller brush but certainly not travel size. All in all a very good value to start.

Just as a general rule of thumb, people tend to characterize brushes based on knot size and loft
Knot sizes
less than 22mm is Small
between 23 - 25mm Medium / L
Between than 25 - 28mm XL
greater than 28mm (XXL)

I have one and have given two to family. They are a good brush. Go to Badger and Blade and read the reviews. As a starter or permanent they are a good option. They are a bit stiff and have a resiliant bounch. They also are not as soft and therefore called a bit scratchy. You can travel with any brush as long as you have something to put them in. I originally went to CVS and aske for their biggest pill bottle. They gave me one for $0.00. I drilled a hole in the top and in the bottom (do this carefully) so that there could be some airflow and voila, I was traveling with my brush.
