Saint Charles Shave: Aspect, Avalon, Dagger and Newspice
Well, based on alex's recommendation in a thread a while back, I decided to pick up some soaps from Saint Charles Shave and see what all the fuss was about. I got the four "flavors" as listed in the title, and I will talk about the scents at the end of the review. New soaps are fun!
Presentation: not great. all soaps are grey and come in a cellophane packet. if they hadn't been labeled I couldn't have told them apart. I make a habit of melting all my soaps into small ziploc snap 'n seals, so I didn't care too much.
Latherability: totally. freaking. awesome. denser than mama bear's, longer lasting than conk, and slicker than chelsea's soap garden. uber-lather was very easy with no extra glycerine or fuss. for some reason, the more water you add, the better it works. I mean, WAY more water than I use with other soaps. but very easy to whip up.
Lubricity: very good, no complaints. blade slides right along. one of the most lubricating soaps I've used, on par with some of the better creams I've used.
Scent: ok, this gets broken down by each:
Aspect: very "fresh" smelling. for some reason, it reminds me of a freshly mown lawn by the sea. I can't really say what it smells like, it just smells very fresh. liked this one a lot.
Avalon: very smoky and musky, hard to put my finger on what I didn't like about it, but one of the base scents in this one makes me sneeze. possibly sandalwood, I'm allergic to that.
Dagger: my favorite. musky, sweet, mysterious. for some reason, doesn't have much of an aroma while the soap is cold, but once you whip up hot lather, it smells amazing. very dark and sexy without being overpowering at all. subtle notes of vanilla in the background.
Newspice: honestly, I didn't care for this one, the spiciness was good, very peppery, but it just seemed so far over the top. I like a soap with a good strong smell, but this was overpowering. if the smell had been weaker, it would have been fine. despite the name, it smells nothing like old spice. very spicy with a hint of florals in the background.
