also, i was looking at some omega brushes. specifically a pure badger brush. is this a good item for a "newbie"?

The brush is probably ok. I would be cautious though, as they seem to be prepared to sell cr@p straights.
Not experienced the omega's. Why don't you have a look in the reviews section?

From what i've seen at various sites, most folks like their Boar brushes, regardless of who made them (Omega Boar brushes get a lot of love, also the Semogue Boar brushes are starting to get a lot of love). I used nothing but a boar brush for ~ 10 years, then I found all these sites and started buying some badger brushes. I have some great badger brushes, but also some that don't work well for me (too soft). With all the diferent grades of badger out there, and some very expensive badger, it might be easier to start with the Omega Boar, learn what you like and do not about it, then look for a badger brush that fits your needs.

A lot of people recommend the Tweezerman badger brush as a starter brush (around $15US from Amazon.com). It's certainly one of the cheapest badger brushes out there, if not THE cheapest. I've got one, and it does the job fine. It doesn't shed, and although a little scratchy it gives you some idea of what you'd like in your brush, whether it be softer or harder. I also have a Semogue silvertip and love it, but your taste may vary.
That said, I agree with Moe - buy a cheap brush, use it, decide what you want to change about it, then look for a brush that fits that requirement. As long as you buy from a reputable brand you should be fine.

i've got a synthetic hair wilkinson sword brush. it is not too bad, but i can't seem to work up a lather all to well with it, using wilkinson sword soap. so i am looking to buy a decent badger brush.
