Hurricane Gustav!

Question: Is it me or does the press have a real hard on for Gustav? They seem to be salivating over Gustav and the potential havoc that it may wreak! Which brings me to my second question: Will the Dems and the media, once again try to lay the blame at the feet of president Bush and the Republicans as they did with Katrina (assumming there is similar damage of course)!

The press, being amoral, are probably on the same sort of "Simpsons" track. Remember the snowstorm? "The death toll from the storm so far is... zero! But it's getting ready to shoot right up there."

I believe that what the Democrats blamed Bush for was not the hurricane, but for the cronyism that left us unprepared to deal with it.

The stunned LA governor wasn't much help either.

Then there are the damn stupid people that refuse to leave.

Yes, lots of blame. Louisiana politics have been broken for a very long time.

But in fairness, for every person who was too "damn stupid" to leave, there were ten who simply had no way out because nobody did squat to enable an evacuation. I know people who were there, and the only ones who got out alright (quote from Randy Newman) had access to an automobile. Many city dwellers don't.

He is talking about the guy who was running Fema at the time. He had lied on his resume and bull****ted his way into the top job at Fema. Most people think that he was Bush's pick and blame him for it. In fact he was chosen to be the deputy director of the agency by his long time friend who was the current director. That man was chosen by Bush and was qualified. When the director retired he recommended Michael Brown take over the agency. That is how he got there.

During Katrina his response was slow and disjointed and caused him to be relieved. Vice Admiral of the Coast Guard Thad Allen replaced him and that is when things started to get done. Michael Brown's idiocy cost billions and an untold number of lives in the region but like everything else, if something goes wrong in this country it has to be the president's fault cause he is omnipotent and everywhere.

Yeah people think the president is kinda like that. Not that the local corrupt politicians have anything to say about how the levi's are built in their region or people could just not shoot at each other...

Bush deserved what he got. He went down there grandstanding and when he suddenly realized he had a disaster on his hands, he simply beat feet.

It is a disaster on your doorstop! Ideal for the American media in its insularity IMHO Have any of you heard about the floods in N India & Nepal. It makes Katrina look like an upset in the playground....

When you're the top man you are ultimately responsible for those under you. If Clinton had of been in power everyone would be blaming him.

The good thing is even someone as daft as Dubya seems to have learned a lesson and they are applying what they learned. The LA Governor this time around seems to have a lot more on the ball than that doe eyed fool that was the last Governor.

Unfortunately if its not on CNN it didn't happen (or Fox for the republicans). They loose 10's of thousands every year during monsoon and typhoon season in Asia, and unless it's a slow news day it barely gets a mention.

I remember being reported at the time that Clinton already had the Army Corps of Engineers working the levies and Bush canceled the program to "save money". As far as cronyism goes if I am not mistaken good ol' boy "Brownie"'s previous claim to fame was as the head of a Thoroughbred race horse association. There is a good chance that Clinton's efforts would have a made a great difference. Bush's ineptness certainly made it's own impact.

That;s the thing. It's not a typhoon, it is flooding caused by monsoon rains & has caused the Kosi river to alter its course by 15 miles flooding areas which normally are unaffected. It seems Gustav has not delivered the devastation as expected & is lessening in intensity. Good for all concerned. Just Hanna & Ike to worry about then

And that is exactly the point, then again, monsoon season is every year. As for insularity, A hurricane in Louisiana is far more important to us than a monsoon in India, or anything that happens anywhere else in the world, for that matter. But that's nationality, and human nature. The floods are being talked about quite a bit, but mostly on NPR (National Public Radio). As a matter of fact, they had an hour piece on it today.

Couldn't agree with you more, I'm sure the people in India couldn't care less about a Hurricane in LA either.
