Default Birthday Presents for SWMBO

Alright guys, here's a tough one: gimme some ideas for SWMBO's birthday. I want it to be special but not make my wallet cry. What do you do for the special lady in your life?

Can you cook, lite candles, play soft music, do the dishes? Need a recipe?

I dunno about the dishes man...that's asking a lot

Sure, got a good recipe?

I tried the razor thing, and after much thought, I decided it wasn't in either of our best interests (though a DE may be in her future).

I've always believed that actions speak louder than gifts, a thoughtful day doing what she wants (or something you've both wanted to do) might be a good starting point.

The natural Japanese hone from OLD_SCHOOL that yo...err...I mean she always wanted!! Some flowers and chocolates with a nice card would be a nice addition to the hone, and quite possibly help to avoid the trip to the emergency room!

Oh god, I can imagine it now:
Her: "What the hell is this?"
Me: "A very rare and expensive 30,000 grit water stone from Japan"
Her: "and I would do what with this?"
Me: "Well, see, it goes along great with your Christmas present, a great frameback Wade and Butcher, also rare and expensive."
Her: "..."
Me: "Uhh, look, I made dinner"

Russel, that's not a bad idea either. Now just to figure out what she wants to do

That'd be like getting her a 7/8 frameback W&B and saying it was a steak knife

+1 on this.

My wife usually has given me a lot of hints throughout the year, and sometimes I remember.
But doing something that she wants (like go shopping for perfume, or whatever) and then cooking something she really likes is a good idea.

Or take her on a weekend to someplace that she always wanted to go to or something. The main thing is that it's about her and what she would like.

Movies? Art exhibits? Museums? Antiquing? Zoo? (if your allergies will stand for it)

Anything in those categories that she might have mentioned?

Now if I could only get my lady to enjoy things like whiskey as much as I do.

You are a lucky man on that front, Bruno.

It's not that easy unfortunately. She gets extremely itchy feet from her dad, so when she goes places, she likes to go waaaay far away- we've already seen everything she wants to see that's close to here. I was pondering a nice picnic at a museum though

Thanks guys, maybe I can pull this one off afterall

Feel free to threadjack all you want. If y'all just want to talk about what you do for your wives, that's fine too!

OK, since you're not into making it 'Special' (these are even inexpensive... ok I'll stop)...

I would say flowers for sure, although it's US and it's more different than what I'm used to.

But yeah, if you can't think of something that your wife will like what are the chances that some strangers on an internet forum can come up with a winner the good thing is that even if you choose wrong may be she'll realize her mistakes and start dropping hints (may be in the form of a list) like Bruno's wife.

We do know she likes to cuddle though... ok, ok, you really don't want to know what my next suggestion would be

I'm sure you'll do well, it's your wife afterall.

Well, my wife just drops hints sometimes (which I don't always notice) so that's not bad.
For our 10th anniversary I'll probably buy a bottle of 40 year old springbank. I bought a bottle of 30 year old as a wedding gift . I'll probably have to think of something else for our 20th

Anyway, a former colleague of mine has a wife who maintains a list of items (it's more of a book really) with which gifts she wants for which occasion, rated by how good a gift it would and where he can get it etc...

Well this year for my birthday Spike got me my straight and took me out for the evening. We started at a Micro Brewery then went onto Hard Rock for a bloody steak and more booze, hehehe

Last year I had a leather corset from him and we went out for bloody steak and beer. In between times he will replace my Dior's Poison if I run low, but as a rule I can be a nightmare to buy for. When faced with the dreaded question "What do you want for your birthday?" I usually can't think of anything "Ummmm, I'll let you know". LOL

There are a few things I would like to do, such as spending a day doing Archery or Quad Biking. I'm not really a chocolate and flowers girl, though I do like carnations and lilly's.

Well, it really depends on what your wife likes. Aside from the usual things like perfume, etc, one gift that has proven quite memorable and original (I don't remember if it was a birthday that I got it for), was a set of personalized (vanity) license plates for her car a few years ago. Not expensive, but original, and something she sees everyday. It can be used as long as she has a car, and shows that you put some thought and effort into it. May not be for everyone, but a worthy idea, I think.

The picnic @ the museum is the best thing yet, abasket loaded w/ two kinds of grapes, a couple of apples, gouda cheese a bottle of wine, some kind of bread or cracker with an appropriate dip or spread and some kind of meat or sausage that is complimentary to the fruit/bread/wine. You are on your way buddy! You wont need luck!

I think that's the ticket right there. Now just to round up some of that stuff and figure out what pairings to use. I'm a redneck in every sense when it comes to pairing wines with foods

Hi there,
These are quite nice, and actually do work as advertised. I've given a few for gifts and both recipients have enjoyed this item. Prices start at around $40, and go up from there.
Hope that helps,
Martin
