Hey guys whats you opinion on the replateing of De's?

replating a razor is fine, but if you are going to sell it let it be known that it is replated. I have a couple that i'd like to have replated also.

What does it cost to replate a DE? I have a DE that my Dad used that is in need of a replate. I don't use DEs, only straights so the only reason I'd consider it is because it used to be his.

replating cost is going to vary by model (surface area) and where you choose to get it done.

If you want to get a DE replated nickel your best bet might be a local chrome plating shop. These shops have to plate their parts in nickel first so the chrome will adhere well. You may also want to disassemble the razor prior to taking it for plating. What razor were you looking to get done Chris?

Plating kits can be had here for the do-it-yourselfer.

only problem with the plug-n-plate kits is they can be tough to get good results. There are things they don't mention with those kits. Such as, if you are plating over an existing nickel surface you need to pickle the surface using battery acid or the new plate will flake off. By the time you buy a kit to do one razor it winds up being more expensive (time and money wise) than taking it to a chrome plating shop where they can basically throw it in with their existing work load easily.

I haven't tried it before, I know the thickness can vary too when you do plating depending on how it's done. Probably is best to leave it to the guys that know what they're doing

yes that is another good point, tank plating (more involved and expensive than brush plating) will form a more uniform plate on a piece. It's not impossible to get an even plating thickness with brush/wand plating it just takes more practice.
