Default KrisKross DE Blade Stropper help

Ok not sure where to put this as it is a strop but not in the traditional sense, and it is related to DE but not in the sense of actually shaving. So here goes.

I have a KrisKross strop and would like to know how to refresh the leather strop disc in it. I think I can lightly sand it to smooth the surface but not sure if others could offer advice. Any idea of how to take it apart?

if it is not in the correct forum heading let me know.

Default here is a link to a photo-not mine

here is a link to pictures,

Shaving Collectibles

This is not mine but middle one is the same box ect.. as mine.

I figured it out. The bottom peice will come off, it has little notches that have seats that it turns into. once the bottom is off you can unscrew the strop and backing plate. I will put some pictures up oif I get a chance and if I can do the picture thing on this forum.

Default Functionality...

Hi,

Do you find they actually sharpen a DE blade well enough to use for a few more shaves, or do you count them as more of a novelty to keep on display?

I picked up a Kriss Kross stropper pretty cheap and tried it out with a used DE blade I have. I felt it sharpened the blade a tad on the rough side. I'm not naive enough to expect it to create a perfect edge, but I thought it might have done a bit better.

That brings me to my final question: I was curious how you actually got the back plate off so you could recondition the leather disk. My back plate is on so tight I don't think I could get it off with anything less than C4

Regards,

Charles

I will attempt o answer your questions.

1) I do think it will extend the useful life of a DE blade. I also tried with used blades, a couple seemed much better, a couple seemed none better if not a bit worse.

2) getting the bloody thing apart was a puzzle. You will see around the edge that there are indents that have a push in and turn look. There will also be one spot where there is a small indent to prevent rotation. I just put a small screw driver in between the bottom and main case and it allowed me to unlatch the indent and turn the case. The case then will seperate. I was then able to unscrew the backing plate and strop leather. make sure you don't lose the spacer ring or let the crank fall out.

3) I refurbished the strop with 220 then 320 sand paper with the disk on a flat secure backing (plate glass). I have only put vitamin E oil on as a dressing. I may need to use some type of strop paste, but I do not know anything about strop paste so let that be your guide.

does any of that help?

Thanks Scrapcan, that does help! I'm glad to see this little beastie does hold potential value for sharpening the occasional DE blades. What can I say...I'm cheap

I followed your screwdriver suggestion and it seems that all I'm able to do is make tiny nicks in the metal, so I'm going to stop while I'm ahead. I really don't want to break it...it's in really nice condition and I'd like to keep it that way

The unit I have came with instructions stating that you should use a few drops of Neatsfoot oil or Olive Oil on the leather and rub in with a cloth once or twice a year to keep it supple. I used a few drops of Olive Oil and it seems to be ok.

I'll probably try messing around with it again once I find a smaller screwdriver.

Regards,

Charles

Charles,

You go the right idea youjust need a better fitting tool. I used a small flat blade and studied the edge to see where a pin is located to get it loose. it will come apart I promise.

My instructions say to put some lather on it once or twice a year. Since I had to take it apart and sand the surface I was not sure if just lather would do it. I may have to try it though.
