other DIY hobbies
ok, so all of us that straight razor shave seem to be DIYists of some sort or another. what else do you guys dabble in? i enjoy the fine art of creating an ale from scratch, making things that blow-up, and any sort of woodworking. i build fly rods and tie flies as well, but i can't fly fish worth a damn (i can cast well, but i can't catch a trout to save my life).

I'm getting the toold together to make my first knife in the Stock Removal method. I'm very excited about it. I should be able to start on it next week or so and I'll also be doing the steel hardening myself.

I have make fly-rods, I tied commercially for while, I'll tie now if I can't find the pattern I want. I am a certified fly-casting instructor. I catch a lot of fish. I do wood working.

A friend and I used to have a small leather business. I had to stop when I moved to Wales though and as the tools were all his and I don't currently have the £££ to buy any tools, it's on hold for a while.
He trained me in Saddlery techniques, though we didn't do Tack or Saddles. We made Guitar straps, tobacco pouches, all sizes of coin purses and belt pouches. Made a set of saddle bags for a Harley once, oh yeah and Archey Quivers and arm guards.
Other than that I do like general tinkering as well as usual girly stuff like x-stitch. I'll see if I can dig up some pic's of the leather stuff.

I'm into graphic design, woodworking (a personal wood shop and a few additional tools would be nice) and some gardening aswell, but since I have a wild garden there's not so much maintenance to do. Recently I started my 'dream house project', which I would like to build when someday a huge pot of gold will fall from the sky. I intent to design and build every little detail myself. The house will be in Modernism and Art Nouveau style combined with my own. A life project.

My main hobby, aside from straights, is computers. I build my own, I build them for friends, I'm an avid overclocker, and I have a ton of hardware all over my apartment.
I'm running an overclocked Q6600, XFX8800 GTX, and 2 x 2 gigs of RAM (those are the highlights) on my gaming computer. The processor is under watercooling, but the rest is on air.
My server runs a 939 X2 3800 with 510 megs or RAM, 2 x 250, 2 x 400 and 3 x 500 gig hard drives. Yea...she's a file server.
Both are in a custom Duality case, which I had MountainMods fabricate.

DIY stuff? Well, I've just pioneered a cheap way to make plastic parts at home for under $20- it opens up a new horizon for projects for me.
I also build PC's and I'm always tinkering with mine. I too have a ton of parts (hey, you never know) laying around, and I have to resist the urge to spend tons of money on new parts like hard drives or processors or ram.
One can typically find me doing something to my truck as well. I'm slowly fixing or replacing everything that needs replaced and searching for the next project. The shocks are going to be coming out sometime in the next few weeks, with possible ball joints (upper and lower). Hurrah for project gas guzzlers

I was a bike mechanic and sales guy for 4 years while I was in college and I don't think my "manhood" could take a rigid frame. Is there any particular reason you don't have any suspension? BTW those look like pretty nice trails, in AZ all of the trails have pointy stuff on them (I miss MN )
But as far as me I am an avid cigar smoker, I am just getting into straight edge shaving, I have my own woodshop, and I grow fruit hydroponically. Oh and I have a really bad habit of buying houses and gutting and remodeling them. This wouldn't be so bad if after every one I didn't say to myself "this is the last one " and buy a pretty new house only to do it again 3 months later (I am on my 4th house in 5 years and am already talking about selling this one)
I am in the process of purchasing land in Rice Lake, WI. When I sell my current house in AZ I am going to be moving up there and me and my wife are building a log cabin. We have a contractor lined up to do the basement and some of the outer walls (Grunt work) but I am building all of the interior (cabinets, doors, flooring, bathrroms, etc)
Sorry if im rambling its early here.

My DIY hobbies when I find time (and why my business is downsizing, time to enjoy life more) involve making bamboo shakuhachi flutes, gardening and woodworking. In the past I made a few knives, flyrods and flies, lots of woodworking, wet-plate photography where one pours their own emulsions on glass plates, and building up bicycles. Right now I am restoring/rebuilding a pair of 30 year old Peugeot road bikes.
Other hobbies too but not DIY types.
Tony

my hands on hobby is making dreamcatchers. I've got one that I made from a grapevine wreath and a coon tail.
I also design my own walking sticks, I have to use them, so why have a boring stick? I've made one that looks like a large peace pipe, using a clay pipe bowl for the grip, and rabbit fur, beads and feathers for decoration. My Endocrinologist took one look at it and asked if it was for smoking or for walking lol. Unfortunately it isn't hollow, so it's just for walking.
My current one will be a combination fishing rod/ walking stick. The hold-up at the moment is working out the logistics of the reel seat.I have cut out a portion of the wood, where the reel should be placed, but the stays are the big hold-up. I'm thinking of finding someone to weld a large washer to a bolt and then just using a nut on the bottom to clamp the whole thing down. I have had someone suggest just simplifying things and use a couple of hose clamps, but I want it to look decent. lol. The cane I'm using for the fishing pole is the straight one with the walnut gearshift knob leaning against the door.

My DIY hobbies...
I do leather working off and on, taught it to 4H kids for 3 years,
I enjoy gardening, trust me in Tucson, Az gardening is a hair pulling experience. between the rodents, birds, and the sun it keeps you busy.
I like hunting, fishing, camping, and generally being outdoors. Due to a knee problem that has been a little difficult lately.
I enjoy some cooking and being with my kids

I do a bit of my own fly tying for my fly fishing. While I am not the greatest fly fisherman, I do enjoy an outing even if I don't catch anything.
I also do my own printing for my photography business. I just don't find that I can get the quality that I want out of a lab.
