Default Table Top Games

Any avid [non electronic] gamers out there? I run a table top gaming club at my college and here are some of my favorites:

Go (Wei Chi)
Settlers of Catan
Betrayal at the House on the Hill
Dungeons and Dragons (hell yea!)

I just learned that hoglahoo is an avid Go player like myself. We're going to have to setup a SRP League

Yes, a couple of other go players are here. I've also enjoyed nine men's morris and pente. I'm fascinated by games with simple rules and simple tools

RISK, simple rules, not so simple to play.

Pente is a fun one, and so is risk. Unfortunately, no one will play Risk with me because I always win
I'm a huge Canasta fan too, but I prefer the Pony variation.

Then you are officially challenged to a game of risk with my brother and me. Are you still in Stillwater? Perfect, my brother lives in Perkins and I'm only an hour away. I'll bring some tissues for you just in case you can't handle your swift defeat. And then if you like, you can try to make it even with a game of Canasta. I'm a good sport

I miss Risk. Takes a full load of players though or its no fun.

Stratego anyone?

How about a simple game of Aggravation I used to play that all the time.

I had a friend who always dreamed of a marathon week-long game of Risk in which each battle was determined by a game of Stratego.

I love Euchre, Hand and Foot, Fluxx, Cataan, Mancala, Spades, ok, I just love games.

Risk sux! Diplomacy is a much better game, even simpler (no dice) and loads more diverse. All Risk players should be forced to play Diplomacy once in their lives.

Catan is pretty cool, but D&D is for babies. GURPS is about 100 times better. Much more versatile. Much more effective. Take one fireball and you're out of combat, maybe even the game no matter what "level" you're at. GURPS uses individual Skill points so you can customise every character. It also employs character Advantages and Disadvantages which (as well as being hard to sum up) are the essence of fun role playing. Much better than, "I swing", and "I strip the corpses of treasure". Money and murder is all there really is in D&D. GURPS has all that and everything else too.

For cards I like cribbage and euchre if I can get a game. Always want to play more poker. Real poker, money table, beers and cigars. Can't seem to find those last two.

I must make a special mention of Apples to Apples ridiculously simple and tons of fun as each Player works their charm and persuasion on the Referee. I also like Chez Geek and Munchkin.

The truth is I LOVE table top games and have a long list of recommendations, like Tribes. Easy and fun. The game is what you make of it. Those are my favourites. Republic of Rome is for the more sturdy gamer. Co-operation and cutting throats at the same time.

I've not heard of Fluxx before, but I enjoy Hand and Foot as well. It's so much better than Foot and Mouth, which is really a pain

@xman: I'm really into SJGames. Have you played NinjaBurger? It's top notch. I also have Chez Geek.

Apples to Apples is a great game and loads of fun when you're around people that aren't big gamers. I also like Tigris and Euphrates, Puerto Rico. I'm also a fan of CheapassGames. The idea behind CheapassGames is that everyone has a ton of board game pieces and boardgame money that they never play with or use (see: Monopoly), so the game doesn't include pieces or money that you might have already, thus being extremely cheap.

Anyone play Mahjong? And I'm not talking about the solitare matching game, I'm talking about the the real, four player game.

I play Go at a stunning level of 19kyu on a very good day :-P, I play Axis and Allies, damn near any board game really. I played D&D once and vowed never to play it again because people get too emotionally invested in it and lose their minds when something bad happens.

Don't ditch the game for that reason, ditch the players. D&D can attract them though.

Thanks for the links, marosell. Especially to Cheapass.

I can't believe I forgot to mention one of my most favourite board games ever, Civilization, and for me the inclusion of the expansion Advanced Civilization makes it totally awesome! Commodities trading is really the heart of the game. You must trade at least three items in any one trade, but you only have to tell the truth about two of them. No serious board gamer shouldn't at least have a few games of Civ. under his belt.

Default GO rocks

I love GO. I used to play all the time online on IGS and kiseido and yahoo and msn, but haven't had much time in the last four years after having kids. But I love GO. I played with the guys at the Carnegie Mellon Go club a little when I lived in Pittsburgh too. I think I was around 8kyu on IGS but can't remember. Proably back to good ol' 25 kyu now. GO is the ultimate game.

Diplomacy is awesome but it's so hard to get enough like minded geeks together for a day long session.

Dungeons & Dragons....wow, haven't thought about that game since the early eighties. Loved it back then though.

Risk was our game of choice in high school. I have witnessed a fist fight break out after seven hours of playing. One of my friends was quoted as saying, "Wait a minute, I have (counts his armies) seven #%&*ing pieces left!", moments before being wiped off the board.

+1 for GURPS as well.

Agreed! Diplomacy makes you think hard about your strategic situation and your fellow players' likely intentions. No lucky dice rolls to count on either.

I forgot all about Diplomacy, with my group of friend we usually ended up in nuclear winter sooner or later though.

If we are going to include RPG's, the only one I like to run is Paranoia, I'll play any of them but that is my favorite to GM.
