First single from the new Metallica album!
The first single from the new album "Death Magnetic" was released yesterday to radio stations and is called "The day that never comes". The album itself is set to be released September 12. The single can be found on Myspace ( MySpace.com - Metallica - CALIFORNIA - Metal / Rock - www.myspace.com/metallica) and you can listen to it for free as many times as you want.
My first impression is just WOW, this is old school Metallica, right back to the "Master of Puppets" and "Ride the lightning" albums (witch happens to be my two favorite albums from Metallica). The song starts of real slow and picks up pace towards the end, and it is said to be the most downbeat song on the album.
There is also a live version of "Cyanide" on Metallica's Myspace page, the sound is not to good so you cant really get a good impression of the song.
Based on the first radio single my expectations for the upcoming album just skyrocketed. What do the rest of you think? Are there even any other fan of Metallica on SRP?

I prefer the older era Metallica stuff. With the black album they started going more mainstream. Music was still good, just missing the angry compenent that I really like. I still haven't decided about the new album. I've only heard Cyanide on the radio, but it leans more toward old school Metallica.

I used to be a huge Metallica fan, but I like old Metallica. So my thoughts on the band are that the Black Album was ok (but it was not the Old Metallica), and there were some good tracks on Re-Load, but where the hell did Load come from? IMO, the only good work they have done recently is Garage Inc. They are even hit or miss when touring.
I just listened to "The Day That Never Comes," thanks very much for the heads up on that. I do not agree that it is a throwback to the days gone by of Old Metallica, but I do think it is a huge improvement over St. Anger. (But then again, I would have been embarassed if I'd released St. Anger.) It no longer sounds like the amps were miced under mud, Lars put the snares back on, and they have a real producer. But I think those are the only good things I can say about it thus far. The complexity of their older music is still missing, Lars' drumming is extremely boring (and he was one of my favorite drummers), James still seems to think he can sing, and the guitar solo (which I think is pretty terrible) is not at all in Kirk's old style.
I should probably say I've only listened to the song on my crummy laptop speakers (which will change as soon as UPS shows up and I can go back inside; the doorbell is broken and I want my package), but I have a feeling that I won't feel any better after I've had a decent listen to it. Here's hoping the rest of the album is better...

It sounds uninspiring to me... lame drumming (is that a computer) and I don't like the guitartone and (lack of) rawness of the vocals.
I'll take St-Anger (the song) over this any day please.

After the first listen I decided it was ok, a hell of a lot better than St Anger (which I hated). I think the Black Album was the last one they did that I actually loved! Enter Sandman was one of my favourite headbanging songs along with Seek and Destroy.
I prefer the old school Metallica stuff, Master of Puppets and Justice For All are my favourites. I don't know, maybe the new one will grow on me. Thanks for posting the link Arlen.

I like old metallica. Black album was still ok, but not as great.
Load and reload had a couple of ok songs, but they weren't great.
When St Anger came out as a single, I liked it, but the rest of the cd sucked.
Maybe they've found their way again. I'll check out the new single.

I'm pretty much the same as Bruno on this one. The single is ok but I still think the sound of Lars' drums is like it's being filtered through a manure screen. Pretty terrible.
This single is ok....but nothing mindblowing.
