Good luggage

My birthday is coming up next week, and my parents were wondering what to get me..
I'm expecting to be doing quite a bit of traveling in the near future, so I'm thinking that a quality suitcase/luggage would be something nice to have.. I'd like to get something that gives me a "garment" bag type thing to hang dress type clothes without gobs of wrinkling. I've almost always carried a duffel, but now that I'm getting into business travel I'd like to have a better way to maintain hanging clothes.
Something that's carry-on friendly but potentially expandable to fit more stuff (I check my luggage quite a bit anyway due to preference for straight razor shaving).

Right now my front runners are a Victorinox and Tumi

Since I find people here are pretty well educated in "fine stuff" I just thought I'd see if anyone had some good input. Would like to keep it somewhere in the $500 range, cost isn't a HUGE factor, but no $3000 ostrich skins or anything!

This isn't going to be of any help to you, but ever since I saw Three Kings, every discussion about luggage reminds me of that movie, specifically when they are trying to get the gold out of the bunker.

I don't know if this is a finer thing or not, but I've been satisfied with samsonite

I have yet to solve the wrinkled clothes while traveling dilemma. Garment bags never do it for me because of their lack of space for packing other items. Recently I got the suitcase below, and now I want to get an entire set of Rimowa luggage.

It's pretty no frills stuff, just very light and durable, with a few little extras.

You gotta roll your clothes up. Roll it all, shirts, pants, even suit jackets (just be careful while doing it). It'll never wrinkle more than can be taken care of by unrolling it for a few hours.

Yes. The luggage is great. It guaRds itself, and you always have clean unwrinkled clothes.

But samsonite has always been good.
the thing with luggage is: it will get treated roughly by baggage handlers, it will get stuck between doors and conveyor belts, ....

If you care about what your luggage looks like, don't by anything fancy because chances are it will look like my first samsonite when I got back from my first plane trip: as if it has stuck between the cargo doors

. Boy was I happy that I had decided to buy the scratched model that was 50% off.
It was still in good working order, but it would have had that mauled look anyway so I think it is rather pointless to pay extra just to start with mint luggage.

I'm looking mostly at carry-on stuff so baggage handling isn't a huge deal.. I'll give some of these suggestions a look and see.

Looks like good stuff, I might go with that actually. I've never been a huge fan of wheeled luggage.

Well I decided to go with the Red Oxx, got the air-boss and the flying boxcar. Boxcar was on backorder but I explained to their customer service (who appears to be the wife or daughter of the founder/owner) that I needed it by Sept 30 since I was getting ready to come back to college. And guess what? It arrived on the 30th!

Anyway, I stuffed both to the gills packing for college, and just started unpacking and the tally for the "air boss" (carryon size for plane travel) was

2 cargo shorts
7 dress shirts
3 jeans
1 dress pant
11 boxers
16 pair socks
4 t-shirts
1 pair cowboy boots

WOW! And as expected the quality is top notch, and just well thought out luggage altogether. Highly recommended to anyone interested.

Good decision! I got an Air Boss from Jim over a year ago, and that is all I use for business travel, along with a matching gator to hold my ipod, headphones, book, etc.

Yup, I visited onebag and their comment on wheels versus non wheels was part of my reasoning for the RedOxx stuff. I've never been a huge fan of wheels anyway, but their research on the subject made it a no-brainer.
The Airboss rocks!! The boxcar is really nice too, just in the general sense of being a big tough bag. Still supposed to be carry on size. Figure the airboss will be my go-to for business travel, and boxcar go-to for casual travel.
