The SRP Heavy Metal thread
Meeme's introduction thread has shown that several of us are Heavy Metal enthusiasts
I have felt that a specific thread would be nice. So here we can discuss everything related to the finest Heavy Metal music: new releases, neglected gems, old and obscure acts -or not, recommendation inquiries, etc. Feel free to share anything you have lately liked. YouTube or MySpace links are obviously welcome. I know that YMMV but please try to keep a high standard -i.e. no mallcore.
Postscript:
Understand "Heavy Metal" as a generic term for the whole genre. You can talk about any subgenre, for instance Doom Metal, Thrash Metal, Avant-garde stuff...

Eagerly awaiting Manowar's new album, and praying to the Gods that they visit Belgium again.
Imo Manowar is what all metal bands should aspire to.

PAGAN ALTAR
I would like to talk about my current personal favourite act, PAGAN ALTAR.
This is an old British band formed in 1978. Their first LP, Volume 1, recorded in 1982, was only released in 1998! They have recorded since then 2 other albums. IMHO their latest one, Mythical & Magical (2006), is their best. Vocalist Terry Jones (not the Monty Python member!) has a strange and occult voice. As soon as you get used to it, you will really like it.
You can listen to PAGAN ALTAR tracks at their MySpace page or download tracks from their official site.
What do you think of PAGAN ALTAR?

I really don't like heavy metal that much, except for Iron Maiden. And Thin Lizzy if that qualifies...
I'm more into the heavier stuff like Meshuggah, The Dillinger Escape Plan...

I love H.I.M. Saw them a few months back in Sydney and they were great. Not into a whole lotta other metal, though I am gaining an appreciation for the 80s glam bands (Whitesnake and the Scorpions at the moment).

+1 on Porcupine Tree. I've seen them twice here in San Francisco. Although not metal (more prog rock) they really tear it up live.

I myself enjoy metal nearly exclusively. Most recently, I have been enjoying the new album "obzen" by Meshuggah, it's fantastic. I tend to go for the crazier math metal (eg Converge) although depending on my mood I may go for something a bit more symphonic like In Flames or Dimmu Borgir. I also enjoy the work of Nile. sorry, no youtube links, I'm at work right now.

Lamb of God is my favorite band at the moment. I saw them at ozzfest last year and they were amazing.
Warning: Videos are uncensored
Also, All That Remains is another favorite of mine.
And, Nothingface

I'm in the milder group I think.
Iron Maiden... offcourse, classic stuff.
If I'm in a hyperactive mood I'll listen to Dragonforce a lot. (LOVE their newest album) and Emigrate rocks my boat as well.
Fear Factory is excellent as well.

I should add that I'm a huge fan of Amon Amarth as well, and I support their viking lifestyle.

Maiden
Obviously, Iron maiden is at the very, very top of my list. I was there for the Somewhere Back in Time in Cleveland, OH...wonderful
I also like Judas Priest, and have enjoyed their new Nostradamus album.
Motorhead rounds out my top 3, but I've been a little disappointed in some of their recent efforts.
Manowar I like, Danzig is a classic, and Black sabbath is okay, but poor Ozzy is just getting old.
So much of the new stuff I just can't get into....Killswitch Engage, Mastodon, they all sound very much, if not exactly alike....therefore it becomes unmemorable.
But, overall, I've listened to Maiden since I was a kid....it is comfort music to me, and it seems like they're hitting their second wind with their recent albums which have been outstanding....can't wait for the next one. It's a shame more of the heavy metal genre never got the air play in the US which it deserved...instead, our radios over here get bombarded with bubble gum, hip-hop and country rubbish...

MANILLA ROAD
MANOWAR is obviously a great band but MANILLA ROAD is certainly 10,000 times a musically better act!

Vocalists like Dio or Rob Halford have managed to keep quality while getting old. The problem with Ozzy is probably the excess of drug consumption.

In my day lad, Ozzy was a lightweight as far as drug consumption is concerned - If you didn't die your heart wasn't in it !
He should take a sweet leaf out of Bill Wards book.
