Default I Need a New Sweater

About a hundred years ago I bought a great big grey wool turtleneck sweater from Abercrombie and Fitch. It was very heavy and very warm. The turtleneck was loose around my throat and therefore quite comfortable. I wore this sweater all winter every winter. In preparation for our trip to Maine, the boss pulled out the winter clothes and found my favorite sweater is finished, caput, no longer a viable means of covering and insulating my repulsive thorax. The collar has worn through to now be a separate ring. So I want to replace my sweater with a similar model. But guess what...Abercrombie and Fitch no longer sell practical, outdoorsy type garments. They seem to only sell crap.

Does anyone have a idea where I can get a big, bulky, heavy wool turtleneck sweater? I went to LL Bean while passing through Freeport, Maine but they have no turtleneck sweaters. Any ideas?

I wish I could help you there, Brad. I'm a wool fanatic, but rather than sweaters, it's Filson and Pendleton shirts with merino wool or silk long underwear underneath to take the scritch away. I could not live in a southern clime with unchanging seasons. Sometimes it gets chilly enough in our MN home in the winter where I've worn a hat in the house. I like it. Big wool blankets on the bed and the winter nights that make you not even want to set foot out of bed in the morning. Yep, good stuff I tell ya!

Default Sweaters

Try Brittanyboutique.com.

The sell the cotton french sailor shirts and heavy wool sweaters.

They have a very heavy tightly knit wool sweater that should last forever.

I particularly like their french sailor shirts in cotton for warm weather wear.

They also have pea coats and heavy duffle coats.

the quality is excellent.

Have an old lady knit one for you, using the old one as a model?

Thanks for the link! They have some great looking stuff but no where near cheap! Do you have any of their stuff?

I stopped buying mass-produced wool sweaters long time ago. Nothing beats the ones my mother knitted for me. Using high quality wool, they last forever and a day.

Does your mother still knit?

Yes, she does.
But I'm not entirely sure how she'd react if I asked her to knit a sweater for one of the weirdo's with whom I share a straight razor shaving obsession.
On a more serious note, knitting is for my mother an act of love, that she happily does for her husband, her children, and grand-children. It's unlikely that she'd knit for payment. I know, in Belgium, if you'd pop that question in a specialised knitting wool store, they can put you in touch with several people that knit as a hobby and take occasional orders. I can imagine that would be no different in the US.

Bart.

Whew! I'm just glad you didn't say your mother was no longer with us. That would have been awkward.

I'm gonna have to find a new old lady. The one I have in the basement won't knit. All she does is whine and gripe and try to get out everytime I throw food down the stairs.

I found this great looking sweater (I will pass on the hat) but they are in Scotland. I sent a message asking if I can purchase one for shipping to the USofA.

You could try a wooly pully. It's a green military sweater you can probably find dirt cheap.
