barbershops of yesteryear
I can remember going to a barbershop as a kid, it wasn't that great and at one point I almost got my ear lopped off during a haricut, luckily I flinched but it was worth a handfull of bubblegum so I guess it was ok. The next babershop I went to was when I worked in Grand Teton National park about 10 years ago, these guys were absolutely great, I only ended up getting a haircut but when I walked out I felt like I looked a hundred times better than I ever had, so it left a lasting impression. The last time I went to a barbershop was last winter, I live in Portland, and they have a very interesting new place (about 5 years old now) called Hair M it is an all female operated barbershop, including straight razor shaves. Hair M in fact is why I got into straight razor shaving to begin with as it facinated me. Long story short the women are hot, the service is excellent and they even hand you a beer, glass of wine, or soda while you wait. The other plus is they serve cigars there. Not that I have ever seen anyone smoke in there but I imagine you can. The experience was like this. I walked in they offered me my choice of beverage, or cigar, I had to drive so I had a soda and I didn't see what kind of cigars till it was all over. I sat down surrounded by man magazines, and then was seated in a nice barber chair, I requested the cut that I wanted and she went to town. It only took about 10 minutes and she was talking to me the whole time about man stuff which was kinda interesting. After the initial cut was done, she led me to a reclining chair, rinsed my head and then proceeded to put a hot towel on my face and massage my scalp for about 10 minutes. I am not one that gets into a lot of foo foo stuff but this gal was good, I nearly fell asleep. After that she did the same to my face, at that point I was ready to move in, when that was all done she then brought me back to the chair and produced the neatest little straight razor I have ever seen and proceeded to trim my neckline with that. That is what started my facination with straight razors as there wasn't a nick a cut, or anything and it was the closest shave on the back of my neck I have ever had. Long story shorter, I spent nearly $50.00 that day but all in all I have to say it was worth every penny as I felt great when I was done and looked good too. That in itself can be a serious accomplishment. Not that it was really a barbershop but these gals were good, and the scenary was great as well.
