Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15. 13!
I would like to humbly submit that friends and Country be interchangeable.

As a member of the partiot guard I amd proud to remember those that have fallen in service, may it not be in vain.

(edited out comments on the politicization of this day)

I greatly thank the fallen and their family for making such a sacrifice for the good of our country.

Just adding to your post, in remembrance.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

- Lieutenant Colonel John Alexander McCrae, MD (November 30, 1872 – January 28, 1918), an Ontario physician and later, field surgeon.

Default Resigned, not retired

I am a resigned (not retired) Lt. Colonel and 18 year veteran in the United States Army Medical Corp. I was mobilized to Kuwait in 2002 and spent a month or so in Iraq during the height of the war. I served with distinction, was awarded a bronze star, and went home after 7 months. I got divorced, got fired, moved to another state and restarted my life. I accepted this sequence of events as fair play. Reservists get mobilized and war changes people. In 2005 the army mobilized me again, this time to Ft. Hood where I wasted my time doing appendectomies and colonoscopies on military dependents for 3 months while my own private practice slowly withered. I was able to resign my commission only with the help Senator Byrd and some influential friends in the army heirarchy, despite having satisified my contractual obligations 18 months prior. I am a patriot and still respect the Army as an institution. It is disappointment to me that that great institution is run by obtuse bureaucrats devoid of personal accouintability.

It's sad that we, as Americans, and I'm talking to myself as well, choose to remember our troops, whether active duty, retired, mia, or kia, on only one day a year.

To our servicemen and women, I am deeply thankful for all you've done
not only for America, but for other countries as well.

In war, every day is memorial day. It's revealing that a holiday is required for the majority of the population to grasp the value and cost of the service that some have chosen to give.
