When I first began with my trusty DOVO I had done some similar math regarding long-term savings. I have one of those steel wool beards which lays waste to an M3 in a couple of shaves. I also have the poor luck of having a VERY fast growing beard. I could never totally remove the stubble with an M3 and sometimes found myself shaving toward the end of a long work shift just to comply with my employer's strict dress code. Needless to say it was costing a fortune in disposable blades. Since learning the proper use of my straight razor I have been able to shave close enough so that my morning ritual will get me through a whole day (sometimes two) without that sloppy look. I sit in the middle of the road on this issue. If I were to stick with my first blade and the necessary accoutrements then my savings would be tremendous. However, like any man with a great hobby I will spend money whenever I see something that will add the almighty "cool" factor to my meager collection. Thus the savings gained are soon lost. Argue all you want but if you love this method of shaving enough to be here... you probably aren't saving a dime.

Get them started with the brush, warm lather, and a DE, they will love it and you'll have them to share your acquisitions of new soaps and cremes with. At least it worked for me..
That also took the cost out of the equation, since the wife enjoys it as well
