Default Henckels 8/8 with plain rounded carbon fiber scales

Here's an 8/8 Henckels for a member here rescaled with some CF. Seems like everyone has/loves these blades. Anyway, check it out. Yes, there is a slight taper to the wedge. The washers are solid brass domed washers made from 3/32" tubing. You can find instructions on SRP somewhere. They are probably hiding. I think the original idea was Bill Ellis' and then maybe Vlad did a new jig for them. I am kind of sick of photographing CF as it never looks NEARLY as good as it does in person. The pivot pins are adjustable. Anyway, enjoy. Comments/criticisms welcomed.

Sorry, I'm not taking on any more "projects". That means no scales, restoration, honing, you name it. Look for my custom razors in the future though!

Very nicely done! I may have to get a razor done in CF in the future.

That razor gets my RAD up and going more than any amount of burl or gold wash ever could.
Awesome work.

Alex,
Those scales are super cool! Being a road cyclist, I am sort of a carbon fiber junkie, I am on a Look 585 right now. Look were one of the original innovators in the carbon fiber frame market, anyway, do you make the scales yourself? I have four razors in my rotation right now and as my budget allows, my RAD will grow. I would love to get something in a set of those carbon scales at some point!

Thanks for the cool pics and the resto work,

Thanks! Yes, I make the scales myself. Guys who want a set just PM me and we talk. If you ever need a set for a blade you have, let me know. I also may be selling some razors of my own soon with the option to scale them in CF, so keep a lookout.

P.S.- I checked out that bike- very cool. I'm more into BMX stuff myself and currently ride an Eastern Bikes Battery. My fiancι has a Jamis XC 2.0. I really don't know very much about any bikes besides BMX though lol.

Nice classic shape with a modern feel!

I'm curious though, are you using any type of liner for the interior of the scales? I ask since I always think of CF as being VERY light weight. The 8/8 Friodur is a freakin cleaver, but you have the weight balance dead-on. I was also thinking in terms of asthetics; a thin brass or SS liner would give a very cool color contrast to the CF.

Regardless, that is too-cool!

No liner. In my mind, any liner would destroy half of the point of CF scales. They will probably last as long if not longer than the razor as-is. If you add a liner to a perfect material, it's more trouble than it's worth. Aesthetics is cool, but the function is perfect with this material. As for weight, I just eyeball it and it turns out well. It isn't as light as you think probably. It's very dense but light for what it is I'd say. I think unless the scale material is either VERY light or VERY heavy, when you make a set that follows what might have originally been on the razor you will at least be close if not dead-on with balance.

That's why I asked. I guess I figured it was feather-light and the liner idea was to add a little weight if needed. After using a CF motorcycle helmet (which aint exactly light) you'd think I knew better!

Very cool stuff!

Davis....Alex worked on my Greaves and put a set of CF scales on it. He posted pictures of it in this forum. I too, am an avid cyclist, and I just had to have a set of CF scales.

BTW, I ride a Trek 5200 on the road and a Trek Fuel EX9.0 when I feel like getting out in the woods.

It eats tools for breakfast. Honestly I have broken a lot of blades and wheels and that kind of thing trying to cut it. It clogs up sandpaper/belts really fast too if you aren't sanding under water. It is just really tough to work. The dust is really fine too and toxic supposedly so make sure to wear all kinds of protective gear.
