Default J. A. Henckels razor with Purpleheart Scales

I made the scales for this 5/8 J. A. Henckels blade for a member of the SRP Yahoo group. The scales are made from Purpleheart wood which has been scorched to make the color a deep dark purple. The finish on the scales is sanded and polished CA (super glue). The wedge, pins and domed collars are made from brass.

Very nice razor! That's some aweseome job you did!

Quick question though - how do you "scorch" the purpleheart? Propane torch after sanding?

I scorch the Purpleheart with a small butane torch by moving it slowly across the wood and watch the wood turn dark. Be sure to keep moving and watch the edges as they are thin and will burn. When I have it scorched all over or mostly all over I will then sand it and this removes the dark part and leaves a very dark purple. It is somewhat difficult to get a complete uniform color which to me looks kind of cool. I then sand it using progressively smaller grit sandpaper until I use 2000 grit for the last sanding.

One of these days in your travels, a guy is going to show you a brand-new deck of cards on which the seal is not yet broken. Then this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the jack of spades jump out of this brand-new deck of cards and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, do not accept this bet, because as sure as you stand there, you're going to wind up with an ear full of cider.
