Austin has an indoor smoking ban, so that kills that. I am thinking of a place though. In North Austin there is a coffee shop (not great coffee, but not a busy place either) with a meeting room in it. My martial arts studio used to use it for UFC fights. It's in the same shopping complex with a very nice pipe/cigar shop (also "gentleman's gifts"), a couple of restaurants, and an Alamo Drafthouse. It's also near Sherlock's. It might be a good place where we could meet, break up, and meet again. We could get together for a few demos, let folks go have a smoke or bite to eat (social time), meet back up for more activity, then folks could go do other stuff with their afternoon/evening.

I suspect once we get going, we won't stop.

foundlingofdollar,
If you are talking about Texpresso, I know Dave the owner pretty well, I worked in that shopping center for four years. That would be a great spot, they have really good coffee. They don't sell beer but we might be able to bring our own, I know they have hosted football games there that were BYOB. PM me if you would like me to contact Dave there at Texpresso. I guess we just need to settle on a date. It looks the only person who has responded that can't make the weekend of July 19/20 is spiffy chimp and it seems like there is more conflict with all of the other prospective dates. How is that date for everyone else? I'm reallt looking forward to meeting everyone and gaining some insight from some of you masters!

Yah, Texpresso is the place. It's been my all afternoon study place for a while. While it dosn't have everything that we would be looking for in a meeting place, it does have quick access to everything one could possibly want. There's pipe world if folks want to step out for a cigar, coffee and snacks in house, a few places for a full meal, etc. Let's try to get some more info as to date and time then if we can agree on the location, you can make contact for us!
The one down side is not much access to the sink. The men's room is a single-seater sort of deal. Would it work to have some large tubs of water, maybe even access to a large coffee dispenser of hot water?

Can we say Sunday afternoon tentatively? That saves me from having to make a request off of work. I'm open to Saturday, so if Sunday doesn't work for someone, please just let us know and we can do Sat instead.
Dave, would you mind checking in with Texpresso for us? Just hours and availability of the room for Sat and Sun, and any costs/policies would be great. Additionally if they would be able to provide us perhaps with a few bus tubs and a carafe or two of hot water, that would probably be great. Hopefully we can firm up a date fairly soon.

But, son, do not accept this bet, because as sure as you stand there, you're going to wind up with an ear full of cider.

Works for me. Let's say we keep this thread open and bumped up through Monday evening and if there are no objections we make it official. Sound good? If you're following this thread and can give us a tentative RSVP, let us know!

Sunday the 20th works for me as well. I will be happy to contact Texpresso and try to work that out. I will also be thinking of some alternate locations if for some reason the coffee shop does not work out. Let me know if there is anything else I can do. Thanks Doc for helping promote the Central Texas Meet-up on the SRP calendar, we will let you know but it looks like the 20th is going to be the date.

Fortunately, we have a 9:15 service and I don't have my usual orchestra duties so I can head out after the service and be there around 1:00.

Saturday the 19th would work for me. Sunday would be impossible. But, I think you have to go with whatever date is convenient for the most people.

I just met with Dave at Texpresso, so here is the scoop. The room is $25 per hour to rent, if we do this it will be closed off and we can pretty much bring in anything we want to, blades, demo equipment, food, beer, etc... If we need a couple tubs of water or towels that kind of stuff will also be available. We can still use the facility without renting the room and still bring in everything minus the beer and maybe food but we will also be at the mercy of the weekend afternoon regular business. My thought is to rent the room for two hours, that will give us time to spread out and play around with our toys and have a couple of pints. At the end of that time we could clean up a bit but still hold a few tables and hang out for as long as we want to. If we get ten people, two hours will be five bucks each. If we reserve the room but it looks like there will only be four or five of us we can just cancel the reservation. The more who come the cheaper the room gets or we can reserve it for longer.
I am still good with either Sat. or Sun. Let me know how the room ideas sound to you and we can continue to hone in on the day.
