Austin Tx informal?
It's come to my attention that there are a few of us in Austin. Would we be interested in getting together for an informal meetup?
Seraphim and I are both new to straights, and I for one would love to have a chance to, for instance, see stropping technique in person and have my errors corrected.

I could be talked into making a pilgrimage to Austin.

Sorry, I read the user name off the wrong message in my PM box. I did not mean to misrepresent Serephim's level of experience or geographical location. I intended to say that davisbonanza lives here in Austin and is also a new straight shaver.
I would love to get together with some like minded folks to learn my stropping technique, perhaps honing, and exactly how to perform all these sharpness tests. That said, I would hate to invite a bunch of experienced folks just to turn them into a Q&A panel. I think a meetup including some conversation, good food and/or drink and/or tobacco blended with some signature Austin music or outdoor beauty would be
a great time.

I'm in!
I am definitely in for an Austin meet and greet. I was just looking at the thread from the last two Dallas events and they looked like a good time! I think we know how to do it up down here in the capitol city so if any one would like to join in let's get something together. My schedule is pretty open so if someone throws out some dates, times and locations maybe we can start planning something. I hope to meet some of you guys soon.

I'm assuming a weekend would probably be best. If a Sat I will need to request off work, if a Sun afternoon there would be no work issue. Kenrup said the end of this month and early July would work well for him. Anyone else have some suggestions for times and maybe venue? What kind of facilities would we need?

The Dallas Meet Up meets at a Sherlock's Pub in Arlington. It works out pretty well, we do get left alone when all the razors come out. Any place would work that had some part where we could "spread" out and enough lighting to see comfortably.
A Sunday afternoon would be fine with me. Heck, I'll bring a door prize or two.
If you guys like, I could do a bit of a demonstration of stropping and keeping the edge sharp with pasted paddles and or barber hones along with a few other tips and tricks.

Sounds good. We actually do have a Sherlock's here in Austin as well (I live right by it). Let's keep the thread up and active for a few days and see who else comes snooping and their availibility, since there are only 3 of us posting here right now. Let's maybe start looking at July 13 (being after all the craziness of the 4th weekend). How does that sound for folks?

That weekend will probably work for me. I am going to post a reply on the end of the Dallas meet-up thread and maybe we can get some of those folks down here for our July get together.

I live right by Sherlocks, but I'm in an apartment with tiny bathrooms... I'll look into somewhere where we could have access to a bathroom.

July 13th won't work for me. June 28th/29th or July 19/20 would be best for me.

Hey Darren, You don't see folks lapping hones in restrooms every now and then?
It would be nice if we could coordinate this event as the Central Texas Meet Up and combine the Dallas group. I don't know if John Crowley would make the trip but we only know if we ask and see who would be willing to make the trip. I think I could get some San Antonio guys to make the trip with me.

Central Texas Meet-up
Ken,
That sounds like a great idea. I am good with either of the two weekends you posted. If we get enough people together we may be able to rent a space. I'll check out the rates on the Zilker Clubhouse or maybe a hotel conference room. Have you guys done anything like that in the past?
Cheers

I couldn't do the June 28th, as I'm meeting up with folks for another one of my hobbies (contact juggling), but any of the other dates would work for me. As for renting a space that would depend on how many people we would draw.

I'd love to attend this one. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town both of those weekends on the table. If the date ends up changing, you can count me in; no matter the itinerary. Heck, I'll even fire up the barbecue in the back yard.

if it were just me coming down, i doubt it would happen. i just happen to have family somewhat close by and can make an excuse. i would love to see if others will make it. if some were willing to carpool, i bet it would cheapen the whole gas thing quite a bit. let's see what we can do.

Hey guys, I would be interested in an Austin meeting. I was at the last DFW meeting and it was great. I am just as close to Austin as I am Arlington, so either place works for me.
Sundays are bad for me. Saturdays are better, and right now my schedule is pretty open.
Hope this pulls together.

I'd consider coming if there was a carpool, with gas the way it is, I think lots of folks would be interested in that.
dfw->austin=~200 miles each way / 20mpg * 4 bucks a gallon = 80 bucks (at least)

So far at the Dallas meet ups, we have had around a dozen folks. We have only met a Sherlock's. The lighting could be better but the food and beverage selection is good and they don't mind cigars. I don't think we need to rent a room. Some restaurant around there might have a meeting room that we could use and if we buy food and beverages they are usually just happy with that.
The Dallas meets have lasted about four hours. For this first meet up, we might consider an weekend evening if that would accommodate more guys.
Access to a restroom is a plus. What I am planning on presenting does not need any water. Darren (vgod) on the other hand may want to flatten another hone.
I could do variety of demonstrations. I would rather not get into restoration as that involves a lot of gear. I am planning on showing you guys some of the things you can do to maintain your razors and keep the edges sharper hopefully longer with a minimum of equipment.
I'll bring different types of hanging and paddle strops. A couple of barber's hones.
Depending on what I have on my bench for restorations, I might bring some interesting samples. Right now I have a hand full that are over 150 years old that I'm restoring for a member. But I sure hope I'm finished with these before then!
Darren, if you would bring your barber's razor box again, I can demo on some of your razors. Just so you guys wouldn't think I was throwing a ringer in on you with one of "my" razors.
It will be a blast!
