CrO powder sample from Chrisl
This is the stuff that was being sold by HandAmerican in 4 oz tubs. I had been curious to try CrO for some time (everybody said it puts such a smooth, sharp final polish on a razor), but wasn't prepared to spend $18 for a huge tub of the stuff if it didn't work for me. Well, I found this while browsing the classifieds and saw it was only $4--not too much to lose if I didn't like it, so I went for it.
It came in a little plastic baggie w/ instructions detailing exactly how to apply/use it. I used a tiny amount (there's still plenty left) in Lexol to make a paste for an old strop I found in a junk shop. I kept the coating pretty light, since I remember reading that "less is more" with this stuff.
First up was my 5/8 Gunmetal--it only had one shave off the coticule. Second was my SRP TI fresh off said coticule. The gunmetal got 15 light swipes; the TI 20.
The shaves: best ever! I was getting good shaves off the coticule with one problem: my chin. It needed 4 passes (2 XTG, 1 ATG) to accomplish what I got with 2 everywhere else, and even then, it wasn't perfect. This gave me a completely BBS chin in only 3 passes! Using only the weight of the blade; no added pressure! I should probably back up and say that I did the BBS shave w/ my TI, and a more "everyday" shave w/ the gunmetal. (I didn't go for BBS on the latter, but everything was still smoother than ever before.) Both shaves also lasted longer. As I type this, it's been over 24 hours since I last shaved, and I still look presentable.
The shave was also smoother. It was very comfortable with no tugging or irritation right out of the gate. With just the coticule (good as it was), it sometimes needed a couple shaves to smooth out.
I highly recommend this stuff as a finisher and also recommend Chrisl as a good source for sample sizes!
