Default First Shave with str8

Hello Gentlemen,

I just shaved for the first time with my straight, how was it? I cant say it was that great really, i had some troubble with holding the razor (but im a first timer so it can just get better), I couldnt get that really close shave that everyone talks about, so after i was "finished" i went over one time with an ordinary BIC razor.

for the shave i used oil from taylor of old bond street and luxury soap from truefitt and hill.

I think the problem might be the sharpness of the razor, I tried the hair test thing but it didnt really work which is strange since I gave it to a professional barber to get it honed I also stroped it before the shave but the hair test didnt work..What do you think?

I probably haven't been shaving or honing long enough to provide useful feedback for you. But, it does sound like you did better than I. I ended up with a 2 inch long 'cat scratch' on the left side of my face (stupid left hand).

It gets better tho. Keep at it.

Yes well I am actually quite happy that I managed not to cut myself, and also a little surprised. But i still didnt get the results i had expected and from what i have heard from others.
Thnx for the encouragement!

If you were in the U.S and said a barber honed your razor I would say yikes since almost no barbers have a clue how to even use a straight here. I don't know about Sweden though. First shaves are rarely good. It just takes practice. Things should rapidly improve. If they don't then reexamine the razor issue.

Subsequent investigation revealed the razor belonged to Toshiro Kawasaki a WWll Kamakazee pilot who was killed when his plane slammed into the USS Yorktown. His last act was to shave with that razor. It is suspected the razor is haunted.

Well, I dont know but he seems quite good, but then i dont really know. Here is their webpage BARBER & BOOKS Ok it was my first shave but from what i know the razor should pass the hair test right? And also i felt the razor was pulling the hair which from what i have read is due to dullness..

Congrats-the first is always the toughest. Keep at it,take your time, and don't get frustrated. "Less than ideal" shaves happen from time to time-but wait until you get a GREAT one. No turning back now. Welcome.
