One of these days in your travels, a guy is going to show you a brand-new deck of cards on which the seal is not yet broken. Then this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the jack of spades jump out of this brand-new deck of cards and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, do not accept this bet, because as sure as you stand there, you're going to wind up with an ear full of cider.

You all realize when you are talking strictly custom razors though we all assume that to mean a expertly made razor to our own specs there is nothing in the term custom to denote quality of any kind. Anyone can make a custom razor, however it might not be something anyone of us would ever want to use or buy. Also ready made razors by the usual suspects are strictly speaking not custom since they are not made to our specs. So what is the sense of this post? I really don't know, just thinking out loud here when we refer to custom razors what we rally mean is a razor made to order by a skilled maker and even though what most of us consider to be custom razors like a typical Zowada or Livi is really not a custom razor just a very high end ready made razor. Many more razors are strictly limited production razors like the TI Silverwing LEs. These type razors may be high end or not. Also there is the idea of if you order a Custom razor and the maker uses a blank ready made and does some fabrication and sends it out for hardening or grinding and does the scale work and final work is that custom? How complete does the maker have to have had a part in its creation to still be custom. For example Livi buys the ingots and does everything else. Zowada as I understand it fabricates and pours the metal himself.
So what do you guys think? What is a custom razor?

His wife reported he was using his Iwasaki Razor and while shaving his neck it just seemed to have a mind of its own and came to life and cut his throat. Subsequent investigation revealed the razor belonged to Toshiro Kawasaki a WWll Kamakazee pilot who was killed when his plane slammed into the USS Yorktown. His last act was to shave with that razor. It is suspected the razor is haunted.

I would say anything with a moderate amount of alteration would count, If you made the scales, it's got custom scales... anything done by traveller is pretty much custom,
as is anything done by Robert Williams. Livi's and Zowada's are made by artisans not factory workers, so I'd call them custom.
This is a picture of a Wade & Butcher with custom scales... (Hey, It's custom)

Actually when I created this I was thinking of small one man shops that are producing one of a kind order specific razors. To me a wade and butcher is going to still fall in the butcher shop cleaned up and restored is not really my definision of custom it falls under modified. It is a mass prodused razor that has been modified for either artistic or to restore serviceability. When I think custom I think, razors by Papa bull, Mr Chandler, Livi, etc. but again thats just my opinion.

My first true custom.....I haven't gotten it yet, but I can hardly wait....it's Josh Earl's newest creation. 8/8 acid etched handmade blade with Indian Rosewood scales. If she shaves half as well as she looks, she'll be my new #1 razor....

that is one manly looking blade but you may have to start working out a little more to lift it!
