Whats the deal with these? Can somebody tell me something about them?

A typical straight razor has a single component of steel that has been forged and ground into the blade/shank/tang. A frameback razor has a tang/shank with a slotted spine which has been made to accept a separate blade. The blade is typically welded into the slotted spine but some framebacks have a locking mechanism which allows for removal/replacement of the blade.

The main reason framebacks exist is because of ease and subsequent cost of manufacturability. This allows for the use of easy to forge steel in the shanks while use of a harder, higher carbon steel in the blade.

Just to add, some framebacks are one piece not two. I never remember if the one piece came before the two or vice versa.

Do the faux framebacks count?

Another question is anyone making them now? Dovo, TI? Any of the custom razor makers?

I must admit I saw a nice Wacker made faux frameback on the Shave Shop, but it must have sold.

Well at least one of the posters here has made several(quite attractive ones)

Seeing how he did it had me thinking on how I could make one myself. But with returning to school to finish my degree(only grumble.. years late) I just don't have the time right now.

But I do have ideas for where to get the materials and have views of a Girl Genious Steampunk razor dancing in my head.
