Issues with "New Posts" and "Todays Posts" links
I'm wondering if I'm the only one or not as I have run into the same problem on two different computers, I'm using Firefox on both and they are linux based. I have no issues on other boards that I frequent, only SRP which seems to be undergoing some transformations. When I use the NEW POSTS link at the top of the Screen or the QUICK LINKS > Todays Post, sometimes they work but most of the time I get the following two responses:
This only started about 2 days ago and has me totally baffled.

Some more details for the mods... Right now I cannot search for new posts since last visit or for that matter Today's posts. I've copied the links directly to my address window in Firefox and hit the enter key. I shall paste what I send and the response that ends up in the same address window after the attempt in hopes that it's not all my problem:
I attempt to go here:
http://www.straightrazorplace.com/fo....php?do=getnew
I end up at this page:
http://www.straightrazorplace.com/fo...earchid=375472
However, Opera takes me here: http://www.straightrazorplace.com/fo...earchid=377245
I attempt to go here:
http://www.straightrazorplace.com/fo...hp?do=getdaily
I end up at this page:
http://www.straightrazorplace.com/fo...earchid=375688
Opera on the other hand takes me here: http://www.straightrazorplace.com/fo...earchid=377242
I just checked using the same links above with Konqueror (the KDE file/web browser) and got the same result, however if I use Opera I get through fine. Seems there might be some code issues between some browsers and the latest upgrades of SRP. I don't have a windows machine so I can't check with IE but I'm assuming that one is fine as many still use it. I suspect quite a few still use Mozilla based software so I should not be alone in this. Anyway, hope this helps.... I'm kinda lost when I can use Firefox to access a website. Most of the time I just don't go to that site but SRP is a whole different kettle of fish... I NEED MY straight razor fix daily!
Ok, I just tried pasting the link results I got from Opera into Firefox and it now takes me to the latest postings or Todays msgs as appropriate. There is something weird going on, I just don't know enough to put my finger on it... probably a twiddled bit or byte that's going down the wire wrong way around or something.....
It would probably be helpful if more of you could confirm what I'm seeing if you are using Firefox or other Mozilla based browsers.

I have not experienced the problem using firefox.
Also, I'm unaware of any changes recently made that would in any way affect this... there has been no updates to the forum software for many months. The configuration changes that moved forums around and modified some descriptions would not have any relationship that I'm aware of.
What configuration changes have you made on your end? Install/update any programs? Change any security settings?
Edit: David was working on the time problem... it is possible that there were no matches if the time moved a day ahead or back for awhile.

Joe, you just reminded me of something.... yes, an add-on in Firefox undated itself a short while ago.... I didn't have it on the computer upstairs but installed it today and later I noticed I was having the same problem upstairs. I just disabled that piece of software and at least right now, the links worked. The add-on is a download helper that lets you save videos off sites like YouTube. I've had that software for at least a year but it auto updates itself whenever there something newer available. Once I've confirmed it's that software for sure, I'll post something to the author... the weird thing was that it didn't affect Shavemyface and other sites like that, only SRP from what I could tell... thus my suspicion that it was a problem with SRP. It was that lack of other users complaining that made me think I was going bonkers...
I'll check some more and post my final findings here.
Regards
Christian

Ok, I've tried a few things and yes, it appears that the Firefox add-on known as DownloadHelper 3.01 is the culprit in my case. My issue with Konqueror appears to have vanished as well but it could have been a login issue as I had multiple browsers open on the desktop last time.
Not sure if this is the problem others have experienced, such as Nenad, but at least in my case, things appear to be back to normal now.

Christian
PS: Thanks again Joe, you asked the right question at the right time, just the haze lifted from my brain for a few seconds....

SMF doesn't use the vBulletin forum software (it uses phpBB).
If I had to guess, I'd bet there's a conflict in the Ajax area... we run the forum with the ajax features enabled (doing so saves us bandwidth and screen changes update faster for you because it updates existing pages in your browser instead of retransmitting an entire new page).

Nenad, for now I just disabled DownloadHelper instead of uninstalling it. That way I can still use it if I need to grab something off YouTube or wherever. I don't really use it that often but it does come in handy.

I've got a different issue - my "home page" is very different for SRP - just changed yesterday - now it shows "webmail" "blog" "user details" but no "new posts" - any idea why that just changed? If I got to "community" and then "forum" I can click into a forum and have the "new posts" work no problem - but I really liked being able to get to the new posts directly from the home page...
Mark
P.s. if this has been addressed elsewhere, my appologies, but my quick search didn't reveal any posts.

Yeah, I liked logging in directly on the home page as well and going straight to the new posts.
Nenad, I left a bug report with the Downloadhelper folks, got a reply today to try the latest beta as they had fixed some stuff. I'm using it now and it seems to be working just fine. You can find the beta here.

Why do you log in every time you visit the site? If you have checked the "remember me" checkbox when you log in and don't logout when you leave, you will be logged in automatically the next time you visit the site. You can bypass the home page altogether and go directly to the forums via www.straightrazorplace.com/forums. Overall, I think it's faster... YMMV

Because I can?
I guess it's just force of habit, I do quite a bit of online banking and other "sensitive" things. It's probably just paranoia on my part but I've gotten into this log in log out mentality and just so I don't forget, I always do it, no matter where I go on the net. In a sense to me it feels like turning around and walking away from someone you were talking to, without saying goodbye. I think however, I am not yet beyond learning a new trick or two so I shall try to not log out and see if I can get used to it.
Thanks for taking the time to respond to the other issue, I should have known it was something on my end, it just never dawned on me that it might have been a plugin that is not even active (well, it wasn't supposed to be!) when visiting SRP.
Regards
Christian

I could not get in all day Sunday.
I was in a complete state of panic, but thanks to the outage I decided to take my frustration out on the W&B restoration chopper by starting the handsanding process. Started w 100 grit and got all the way to 600 grit 3 hours later.
I need to take it to 1500 - 2000 - 2500.

Lets try to stay on-topic if we can. I don't mind, but probably not everyone in this thread is interested in a Linux discussion... why not start a thread in the Conversation forum and continue it there?
