firefox slowdown
Since the latest changes to the site over the last month my Firefox slows to a crawl when I am signed in (90% to 100% cpu usage). When I sign out, Firefox no longer has slowdown. There is also no elevated cpu usage while editing a new post (this one). During normal browsing it is elevated.
I have Firefox/2.0.0.13.

But, son, do not accept this bet, because as sure as you stand there, you're going to wind up with an ear full of cider.

It's extremely weird, but unmistakably only when I am signed in. Why it doesn't happen when editing/making a post is also strange.

Firefox is notoriously prone to memory leaks (google for information) which may be attributing to your problem. You may check that certain settings, i.e. javascript, flash, and any extensions are not causing the problem (find out by turning them on or off). If this doesn't solve the issue, you may need a clean install of FF. This is easy to do, but if you need a hand, PM me for help.

I'm also using Firefox and have noted no slowdowns here. IE crashed on me and a system restore didn't fix it, so I'm backing things up and going to do a full format.

I have not installed FF fresh for years (other than automatic updates) and it's open on my computer for most of the day... I've never noticed any memory leak issues or a "slowdown" when logged-on to SRP and I never have to close/reopen it. I'm also running 2.0.0.13.
So, what's different between your setup and mine... things that immediately come to mind are what OS are you running, what add-ons do you have installed/enabled in FF, what add-on tool bars do you have active, what are you displaying that originates from SRP (eg, flashchat, who's online, chatbox, casino, etc.) and how many tabs do you have open. You might try turning off any addons and toolbars to see if any of them are the cause. Have you changed any of your security settings recently that might be related to the problem?
For all practical purposes, no changes have been made to the forum configuration for many months except those enabled over the past week or so. We did change servers in mid-march, and while that has in fact made things faster, the forum configuration is actually identical to that on the old server.
Without additional info I'm at a loss to suggest anything else.

Thanks for the replies.
It's probably one of my recently updated extensions (the only changes that I'm aware of in over a month). I'll try disabling them incrementally.

Sticky do you have the Down them all extention for FireFox? If so it just had a update to 1.0 I think it was and it has been causing problems. It rewrites your FF config wrong in a couple of spots. The problem can be fixed though....

I just had a strange experience with firefox. I downloaded the FF 3 beta and it took about 3 minutes+ to load when I first clicked on it. I then switched back to 2.0.0.13 and had the same problem. I then uninstalled all of it..reinstalled and had the same problem
I was due for a windows reinstall anyway and that fixed everything as usual. Firefox still seems quite the memory hog, but I don't like to surf with IE and Opera wants to go crazy with any torrents I try and download.

You should check into a program called Acronis. It's like Norton Ghost, but better in my opinion. I did a fresh XP re-install with programs (about 10 gigs) in 15 minutes.
I'm on Firefox and haven't noticed any issues. The only time the forum acts weird is with Safari, but that's because it's safari

I've noticed some bad behavior with Firefox since the last automatic update. I use Win2K at home, XP on the office laptop and both tend to slow to a crawl. I left my laptop running last night, with all my normal tabs opened, and the machine practically wouldn't respond this morning. I think there's a memory leak somewhere in the code. I closed out Firefox, waited for a few minutes while the hard drive chugged away, then used task manager to kill the process. Restarted Firefox & everything is just fine.

Thanks again for the hints. Must be a memory leak since today it hasn't done it in over an hour.
Thanks again all.

I too notice a slowing down in FF mostly when I'm posting a reply to a PM. Yep, and it started about Wednesday morning. After Tuesday evening MS updates, I sometimes dread what dastardly mischief has come about in my 'puter.

An update on this old thread. Disabling all Firefox extensions has no effect. I still get massive memory leaks and elevated page faults when signed in. Happens whenever I allow Java. When it is not allowed, leaks and page faults subside. The problem with this is that making a post with Java blocked will keep me from making new paragraphs and some other functions don't work when posting. This is why I don't stop by much anymore. I could fire up a packet-capture app and narrow it down further, but it's simply easier not to sign in or make any posts (most of the time). It only happens on the Straight Razor Place site. There are probably other sites out there that will give me the same problems. I just haven't ran across one yet. EDIT: Note: This post has paragraphs run together because I am making this post with Java blocked... 2nd EDIT: with Java allowed, CPU activity also jumps to around a constant 98 to 100 per cent.

I will without reservation enthusiastically recommend trying out Firefox 3 - if you're still using Firefox 2. The two biggest issues that were addressed were memory leaks and memory usage. Both of which sound like they might be causing you issues.

Got it. Installed it.
After 5 minutes with Java enabled it looks like this might be the cure. If I don't whine my way back to this thread, then it worked.
P.S. ByronTodd for President!
Thanks again to all,

Better than before. CPU usage is still up when Java is enabled, reduced slightly.
The memory leak thing is much improved with Java on or off.
Definitely more usable.

Personally, I do not think that Firefox has a thing to do with this. Try seamonkey, I preferr it to Firefox, personally.
