Spam Killers Alert
Greetings Gents
I reported some spam posted by zhangfanfan001 earlier and they are still there. There is one post here - Scuttle dimensions for the perfect scuttle...
And one here - where to get the hair
Just trying to help.

One of these days in your travels, a guy is going to show you a brand-new deck of cards on which the seal is not yet broken. Then this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the jack of spades jump out of this brand-new deck of cards and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, do not accept this bet, because as sure as you stand there, you're going to wind up with an ear full of cider.

Yes nice work indeed.
I've recently become a moderator on another forum which gets spam as well. (who doesn't)
Are there any ways to minimise the amount of spam which shows up?

Don't allow new members to post until they have at least 5 posts
actually I still stand by my idea to block them from posting any links until they have been a member or a certain time frame, or until they meet a post requirement.
It's hard to spam if you can't direct people to your spam pages...
I also think moderators should have a " antispam" button that both banns a spammer, and redirects them to something unpleasant. like a page of infinite popups...
Or a message that says you've been banned for spamming, and when they click okay, it opens a page with a picture of a can of spam, that they can't get out of... (click close, and 2 more appear... etc.)
Yes, I know it's petty, it's evil, it's fun...

I'm beginning to think that Doc is staying up so late just so he can catch those 1AM to 4AM (CST) spammers....

Since a lot of these spammers are posting the same crap, why not ban them by IP address? If you do that, they can't sign up again without first getting a different IP address.

I think an even better idea is to implement a new posting mechanism whereby every post we submit is queued to await approval from the relevant mod. They can check the post, then place it up on the thread
No, no..no need to thank me, mods. Knowing I've helped improve the site is thanks enough.

Much to simple! we all know that the mods have no lives so to fill their days and nights we should simply call them and dictate our posts that way they will be proper, spell checked and grammatically correct. Also they will need to have the post up within 10 minutes
the only downside is that they will be able to snag the best of bst.

Can overseas members call the mods collect? If not, I like my idea better
Ah, good point on the B/S/T thing! Just make a rule that the mods are forbidden to buy off the B/S/T (or any "heads up" ebay posts) for at least 2 hours after it is posted.
I think we're getting somewhere here sys!
James.

Depends on the kind of forum you;re running, one of the forums I mod on we're free to block IPs from certain countries, another has some key words that result in an instaban. and yet another requires a mod to approve membership before you can post.
none of those would really work on here.

I think you may be right, I see Doc prowling around when I log in ususally around 9AM (BST), which means he's already been around about 2 hours at that point.

We had one earlier today, advertising same stuff. Seriously, just ban their IP address, then they cant create a new account every other day.
