Default The Classifieds - Policies and FAQ

Policy stated simply, succinctly:

  • The Classifieds are for use by members - defined as someone who has posted in the forums.
  • The Classifieds are NOT an alternative to eBay or Craigslist. Auctions are not allowed in ANY form. Any ad that is advertised as an auction will be removed.
  • Prices placed on ads are up to the seller, and negotiations or comments of that pricing should only be between a potential buyer and that seller via PM or email.

The Classifieds are open to all for viewing but only members can post ads. Ads may be placed for goods and/or services and items may be "For Sale", "For Trade", or "WTB" (Want To Buy). Ads run for 30 days by default and may be renewed up to 5-times. Advance warning will be emailed whenever an ad is about to expire, giving the member time to renew the classified if desired. You may edit the contents of your ad at any time. You may cancel your ad at any time.

------------------------------------------------------

To place an ad in the new classifieds:

You will need to assemble the following information prior to starting the procedure to place the classified:
  1. Write your ad title -- approx 220 characters max (incl punctuation and spaces) You will likely want to preface the title with "For Sale", "For Trade", or "WTB".
  2. Establish a price and any special terms -- eg, $220.00 + shipping.
  3. Write the description -- 10,000 characters max (incl punctuations and spaces).
  4. Decide on how you want prospective buyers to contact you. Suggestion: DO NOT list your email or phone number here unless you like lots of spam and telemarketing calls.
  5. Prepare a picture or pictures of the item and have them on your computer ready to upload. Any picture (preferably a .jpg) should be no more than 1000x700 in size and the file no more than 100,000 bytes.

You are now ready to list the ad:

  1. Go to the main site and click Classifieds on the site menu.
  2. When the Classifieds open, click on the category you wish to place the listing.
  3. In the menu at the top of the Category screen, click Submit ad.
  4. Fill in the fields with the info assembled above and then click OK.

That's all!

If you need to edit/delete your add, click My Ads and then modify or delete.

Some questions have been asked about comments to Classified ads. The following are the guidelines:

You can ask any question, make any statement about an item's description - as long as you keep that question or statement civil and respectful. If you feel that something is not in the good/great/excellent description as given, ask about that as you would like to be asked. Please remember that some sellers may not know better or have the experience you have, so try to guide them and educate them in your questions or statements. Above all, keep it GENTLEMANLY!

You can not and should not question a seller's pricing in comments. If you feel that their pricing is out of line, please feel free to PM or email that person with your question (again keep it civil and respectful).

If you have a question or concern about this policy, please PM me or email me at byront@straightrazorplace.com

Please note that as of today, it is not permitted to delete and then recreate ads just to get rid of other people's comments. Doing so will result in a timeout, and a ban from placing ads in the classifieds section for a long time. The specific duration of those periods will be decided on a case by case basis.

Due to the rise of ebay-type sellers who are using the Classifieds to offload questionable items, at any price they can get, we will no longer allow 'best offer' ads.
The problem with these best offer ads is that it is hard for inexperienced people to make a good offer. they are likely to bid too much, and simply be ripped off.

And as we already stated earlier, we want this to be a place where even newbies can shop in trust, rather than having to go through the ebay school of hard knocks.
After all, the classifieds is not supposed to be a private storefront.

If sellers post their asking price, they will be forced to use realistic prices or expect a flood of messages and mails. And if a seller doesn't know how to come up with a reasonable price for an item. he can always ask a more experienced member, or wait until he is more experienced.

Unfortunately, at the moment there is no way for us to restrict the option to make a best offer add.
this means that we will have to moderate this ourselves.
So don't start any ads with best offer. If you do, we will contact you to edit the ad.
If you notice someone with a 'best offer' ad, please contact either the seller himself or -if you are uncomfortable doing so- contact a mod.

(this was already discussed before, but not yet added to the site rules)

We had a discussion with on-admin-high, and we are going to ask people not to put banners in sig lines anymore.

If you have a website and you want people to know this, just put the URL in your sig line, but not a banner.
We cannot enforce this via the software, so we will contact people via PM whenever we encounter banners in sigs.

SRP earns some money by paid advertisments through the banners, so that we can keep the site going.
Since we chose only to have shaving related advertisments, the earnings aren't that big. If people can also post advertisments for free, then we run the risk of losing those earnings.
We also don't want people posting just to give exposure to their banner.

We haven't had any problems yet because generally, people do the right thing, but we want to prevent problems from happening as more and more people find their way to this place. Since several of our paying advertisers are also members here, losing earnings if paying is optional is a real risk.
