Default OK, first post in this thread

Sunday, March 4

Proraso Pre
B&B FauxEbony Silvertip
Moss scuttle
First shave with Mamabear's soap - Irish Tweed
Miller Honey brown hanging strop
Very hot water via tea water heater used for steaming towel
Three (3) different razors - the job being finished with a 6/8 Revisor
4711 aftershave

I am starting to realize that my stropping technique is fatally flawed. I have two great blades that I have screwed up with poor technique, and I am going to have to go back to the hone to get them back into the rotation. Used pasted strop to correct the Revisor, and it is my best razor, good stuff.

Closest shave yet, last pass against the grain - took some time, lather was top notch, heated was even better. Overall good experience.

Default Test Shave

Today was a test shave day. First of many as I like refurbishing these things a lot.

Hot Shower
Hot towel with Proraso Pre Shave cream.
Proraso shave cream
Moss Scuttle
Edwin Jagger Super Badger (C&E)
Newly Honed Novelty Cutlery Co. 6/8 Razor.

I have to say Lynn, you weren't kidding. These things are a beauty to use. It shaved like butter I have to say. No pressure and nice easy strokes. I think I really like the 6/8 size a lot. I am still getting used to it. That and the spike, but I love this razor. I may take it back to the Chromium for a little bit more fine tuning, but it shaves beautifully.
Very proud of this little razor.

Went in for a fast 1 day growth shave, no messing about, and tried a new soap ..

Hot rinse
Proraso green pre
Wilkinson Sword soap in a bowl (I picked it up in Boots chemists in a plastic bowl, clean fresh scent, easy to lather, no irritation)

EJ Best Badger
Lather up
TM red latigo strop
Krusius 5/8 spike
Lather again

Cold rinse
Alum block
Proraso a/s

Nice quick shave, the proraso a/s will take some getting used to, but a nice clean finish all the same.

Have a load of new stuff on order from TAGMSC, including a few bottles of their goats atershave milk and can't wait to get them back into my rotation.

Wahl barbers cream;
Mason Pearson badger brush.

Face:

Splash of hot water;
Heljestrand No 32;

Single pass - great razor and nice shave.

Head:

Splash of hot water;
8/8 Friodur;
Single pass.

Larger size Friodur is excellent at shaving areas of thicker hair (above ears etc). Really close and enjoyable shave.

Body shop moisturising cream (head);
C&E Sandalwood aftershave balm (face).

James.

4 or so days' growth

No prep (other than washing face w/ glycerine soap)
B&B Finest Ebony
Musgo Real Cream
DD #70 strop
W&B 8/8 blade 1 5/8"
TI Frameback 13/16
Genco Tiger 5/8
Sta Sharp 5/8
Trumper's alum
Trumper's Lime Skin Food

Still can't like the Musgo Real cream as much as I want, and definitely does not smell as freshly cut grass, as some people say. Decent lather, though.

Strop was great, really enjoyed using it.

The idea was to compare a few razors. All passed HHT and I had used most of them (except the W&B) for a shave or two already with 9 - 10+ /10 results.

First one out of the gates was the TI. Hm, still not where I want it in sharpness & smoothness. Quickly moved to the W&B. Boy, was it hard to shave with the 8/8 in 1 5/8 length. I'm leaving this one aside. Maybe a 5/8 would work fine for me in this length but the 8/8 did not feel comfortable. It may be a "getting used to it" thing, but I am not willing to spend the time to get used to this. On to the Genco - meh, felt OK but just that and I have come to expect more. Finally - the Sta's second appearance. Felt much better than the others (but certainly worse than its debut) - no wonder, as I had virtually no prep this time and the growth was shorter.

It may be strange, but I find it is much easier and smoother to cut hairs after a week or more without shaving, than hairs on their 3-4 or so day. The longer hairs soften much better with prep and are easier to cut, razor feels smoother

Shave was fairly quick, except that I had to stop and wipe several razors before picking up the next one. No nicks, cuts, or irritation - for which, given the lack of prep and sub-par experience with some blades, I am glad.

Cheers
Ivo

Hot Shower
Proraso Pre Shave
Newly honed Joseph Rogers and Sons Sheffield straight.
C&E Sandalwood Soap
C&E EJ Super Badger
Moss Scuttle

I have to say this razor surprised me a lot. It sharpened well and it shaved super. Very very smooth. I will have to give it some more attention in the restoration department. It definitely has earned itself a good cleaning.

I also lathered right in the scuttle today. I loaded my brush and went to town. Worked quite well. All in all a very good shave.
