Great shave this morning.
I used the Dovo 5/8, along with this Van Der Hagen "Deluxe" soap I picked up at Walgreen's. It was $2.46, so I had my doubts, but it lathered up really well. I had gotten up a little early, so I took my time and did three complete passes, stropping between each one(!)
I think it helped.

~ 1 week's growth
shower
Plisson HMW 12
Tabac ss
Vintage Clydesdale strop
Butcher Bros spike
Heljestrand MK 10
Alum
Coral SF
Great shave - no cuts / irritation.
Razors cut well, but I got the impression the growth was a bit much for them to slide effortlessly. I guess a bigger and heavier blade would have been more appropriate (but I wanted to test-shave with these). They did well ATG / XTG after I reduced / eliminated the growth in the first pass.
Cheers
Ivo
ps I forgot I had a Joe Chandler-honed great shaver to test and could compare with these two - how unfortunate

Vulfix # 2234 brush
C&E Sienna cream

A day of firsts!
Lathered up with the Barbus shaving cream I just got from Iwan. Put WAY too much on my face, then it took a little bit before it started "melting" into a lather. But what a lather -- thick and bubbly. I could spend as long as I wanted to in each pass, and the lather stayed put.
Also used the Dovo 4/8 from Namdnas. Looking at the light reflecting from the very edge, I worried that it might be overhoned! It delivered a great shave once I got a handle on its smaller size. Only two nicks!
I know it probably sounds goofy, me describing all these great shaves, but when you're a newbie, and your technique and gear are falling into place, they really *do* improve that fast!

~ no prep
Custom ivory super silvertip (Matt)
Trumper's Rose sc
Vintage Clydesdale strop
Butcher Bros spike (honed by me + sold, just testing)
Old English razor rp w/ ivory scales (honed by a meister for me)
Trumper's alum
Trumper's Coral SF
Comfortable shave, no nicks / irritation. Much faster than yesterdy, when I was shaving ~ 1 week's beard. In general, I do shave infrequently, and I am still amazed that I can shave several days in a row with a straight without adverse effects. this certainly didn't work with Gilette's crapp
Razors felt different but on par.
Cheers
Ivo

Hot shower, just did WTG and XTG passes with:
Dovo 5/8
Marvy soap
Good: Didn't cut or nick myself at all!
Bad: Even though I showered, kept my face wet, and reapplied lather, my chin whiskers were tough to shave. Not sure if it's the blade or my pre-shave regimen.
Also, I wonder if my water is too hard to support a good lather with the Marvy -- I love the smell, but the lather just disappears too fast. Perhaps I just used too much water?

Warm shower.
W H Sample & Sons 5/8
Barbus shaving cream
Burma Shave boar brush
3 complete passes, stropping in between.
My best shave yet -- I took my time and got totally smooth except for a couple small patches under my chin. My chin is a little red, but not too bad. Now I'm just sitting here and faceturbating.
