horizontal bristles on my neck....
Hello all!!!
I just wanted to "share a problem" I have, with you...
As you all probably know, I got BBS out of my str8s without problems by now.. BUT.... I have these 2 spots, next to my Adam's apple, as shown on this picture:
Is there someone that has the same problem and who has a special technique to get rid of it?
It's so upsetting to have a bright BBS on all the face and just these 2 spots untouched...
PS: Moreover, I would even be ashamed to use a Gliletteete snezor, that I don't have, to shave it (sorry I just can't pronounce it good.. )
Many thanks in advance for your tips guys!
Valentin

This is what I do, pull the skin on the adams apple to the left and shave accordingly, then pull it to the right and shave. No need to deal with the adams apple directly. Hope this helps.

I have the same problem and this is what I do:
After doing N-S on the first pass and S-N on the second pass, then I spend some extra time on that area doing NE-SW on my left side and NW-SE on the right side, pulling to skin towards the ears.
The first time I'll do it with lather, and after that with only water.
For this I hold the blade straight with my strong hand.
I get better results with a 5/8" blade than with a 6/8" for obvious reasons
Note: some days it comes out better than others, depending on blade sharpness (I rotate blades on a daily basis, so I get different results)
Let me know if you try this method and how it works for you.
Good luck

I have a similar growth pattern, expept mine grows from left to right across my whole neck. For a while I used to take extra passes in the area (N-S, S-N, NE-SW + touchups), but after a while I didn't see the point. That's not a highly visable area, and I also found it rather sensitive. The extra passes were causing irritation and had deminishing returns. Now I just go N-S and S-N and that's good enough for me.

Ok shaving Pals!
Sorry for being late on this one.... BUT...
I finally found THE solution... I hope I will be clear enough:
The basic trick here is to make a half-circle motion with your Str8 from your jaw.
The goal here is that your blade has to rotate going down.
The position is the same that you use to shave your cheek. You pull your skin as usual and start to shave just under your cheek, at your jaw line... You then give this half-circle motion to the point of your blade in order to have the blade vertically positionned at the end of its course. For the other side, repeat the operation with the other hand.
Of course, you want your head to lay back, or to the order side, as much as possible and you will not be able to check what your are doing in the mirror. Trust your senses....
Hope this help... If not, let me know and I will post some drawings.

I hate to hijack the thread back to it's original topic, but would anyone happen to have any advice for when the hair in the area pictured above all goes to one side (mine grows from left to right everywhere below my jaw line)? I can use the technique described by Karakoup for one side, but I don't think it would work for the other. Any ideas?

Grow a beard; goop it well so all the hair appears to be growing normally; shave everything else above your jawline.
This gives you the opportunity to remain with us, the users of straight razors and solves the problem of trying to find answers to shaving hair with a mind of its own.
You're entirely welcome for this solution and are encouraged to bring any others to us for similarly quick and astute answers.

Haha, good one Bruce. I can shave it close enough that I look clean shaven, because I can go XTG on it. It's not really a big deal, but there are those special occasions on which I would like to get totally BBS...

Hi Holli!
What about to get in contact with Robert Williams, or Maestro Livi or someone else and get a special str8 with a special short blade in order to you to apply this technique on all your neck?
The other cheaper alternative would be to buy a cheap but good str8 as a "Double-arrow" and to sand it to 3/4 of the blade..
The problem here with traditionnal Str8s, is that the blade is usually too long to apply this technique..
My 2 cents...
Take care!

To illustrate this technique, I made some quick drawings... Sorry for the poor quality...
Black = handle
Blue = blade
Hope this will help!
Have fun!

These are certainly two viable options. Unfortunately, a custom razor is totally out of the question for financial reasons (full time grad student + student teaching = no time for a job). Cutting down an inexpensive razor might be doable, but I'm not sure that I could spare the time (and I have no tools).
Personally, I would rather learn to develop a good technique so that I can get a BBS shave with any (well honed razor) I happen to pick up.

I was just browsing the classifieds a while back and picked up a nice short wedge from English that is really handy around the hollows of my neck. Keep your eyes open for a short one and you might find be able to something that can help
