Default Rasurpur Cordovan Strop

When I started out in this thing I thought it would be a neat idea to have a collection of strops from just about every critter that ever walked or crawled. You name it and I had it and then I realized no matter the critter the result was really the same. So a strop is a strop in the final analysis. So I parted company with most of them and just kept a few.

So if a strop is a strop what then differentiates one from the other. This is probably a question best left for Tony Miller to answer but based on my experience to me it's things that don't necessarily affect its performance assuming of course its a quality strop. If its not quality then thats a whole different matter. I have a DD model 50 which is a horsehide extra heavy strop and to me that has been about the ideal in strops which you just don't see in modern made strops. I have one of Tony's latigo and a Horsehide from him and they are very high quality strops the equal of every vintage strop I've seen with the exception of that DD model 50. Enter the Rasurpur Cordovan.

This strop is of Japanese manufacture made by the Kanayamara Razor Strop Company of Tokyp Japan. (I find it interesting there still is a company specializing in razor strops in Japan). The strop is a model #3 under the Lama Brand and is Horse Hide and Cordovan Leather. It is a standard dimension strop slightly lighter in color than most leather strops kind of a caramel color. Comparing it to Tony's Horsehide Strop which is not Cordovan the Rasurpur is of similar weight and thickness but the surface is as smooth as butter and very luxurious feeling. I've never seen a strop with leather than smooth before and I haven't handled the handamerica version so I can't compare it to that. But like I said above a strop is a strop so how does it feel in use? Basically like Tony's Horesehide strop with an absence of draw which I think is a trait most horsehide strops exhibit. But, otherwise it worked as it should and as they all should.

The only unusual thing about it was the accompanying strop which instead of the usual white was brown like the leather one. I can't figure out if its canvas or linen. It has the larger grain like linen but doesn't quite feel like either. The leather strop has no handles at the botom. It comes with a nickel plate fancy clip or clamp at the top and the usual top hardware. The bottom of the cotton strop has a leather like material covering the bottom kind of like a handle but not really a handle just a piece of material.

On a scale of 1-10 that DD would be a 10 so I'll rate this one a 9. The price with shipping comes out to almost 99 euros.

Pictures are on his site at Rasurpur.De. I'll put some up when I get a chance.

His wife reported he was using his Iwasaki Razor and while shaving his neck it just seemed to have a mind of its own and came to life and cut his throat. Subsequent investigation revealed the razor belonged to Toshiro Kawasaki a WWll Kamakazee pilot who was killed when his plane slammed into the USS Yorktown. His last act was to shave with that razor. It is suspected the razor is haunted.

This was the second strop which I bought new. However, to date, its still my favourite. Only negative I would say is as mentioned that it is not cheap.
Unfortunately I can't comment on the fabric side either, as I know nothing about clothnames or whatever.
Bottom bit of leather on the fabric side is probably to help stop flossing and a bit for flair, Also seems to help against cupping of the material a little bit.

Thanks for the review. Could you please post pics or give a link to the vendor where pics can be viewed?

I bought my Cordovan from there and on first viewing it looks the part. Having used it a few times now, I have to say that my regard for it has dropped. Surface finish is very uneven and requires breaking in but due to the very thin thickness of the hide (not 3mm), I am not going to. This strop uses the flesh side of the hide for the stropping surface which makes it very akin to the old style pliable Russian strops but not as good at stropping. I have a vintage Cordovan that is twice the thickness and with a very smooth even surface that I wanted to save as is. So I bought this strop in the hope of replacing the vintage, in the "in-use" category. My search continues.
I will be consigning this strop to the store box in the loft I'm afraid.
