I ordered a new dovo extra wide strop this week from classicshaving. It just came in today but when I was running my hand over it about half way up it feels like the drunk bumps on the side of the highway. And after looking at it in better light I could tell that it was in need of sanding, but what I dont know is what grit of sandpaper I should use. Since this is my first strop and a rather nice one I didn't want to jack it up by using the wrong grit of sandpaper on it so I wanted to see what you all thought.

If you ordered a new strop that isn't useable, I would contact classic shaving about it. You shouldn't have to "fix" a new purchase.

That said, most people use a fine pumice stone or increasing grades of sandpaper (maybe up to 1000?).

You paid for a new usable strop, correct? If so they owe you a new usable strop. By all means contact them.

Classic Shaving is sometimes slow but should take care of you. They have been good when I had a problem with a brush.

Yes Classicshaving has always been good with me as well, I just wanted what advice I could get on the subject matter. I didn't want to send the strop back just because its only a small area (probably should have made it clear that its only a inch wide section right in the middle of the strop, probably due to it being folded for shipping). Thats why I wanted to know what grit of sand paper I should get so I could fix it myself. But thanks again for the advice.

If thats the case can it be reflattened with some weight placed on the bump and left for a few days?

I'll try that and see if it works, if not I'll contact classicshaving and see what they say.

Dovo strops don't like being folded like most strops. Their 3" one is very thin so re-dressing is not really an option. Contact classicshaving and ask for a replacement but this time advise them that they packaged it incorrectly causing rouging on the surface that can't be rectified easily. I had a 3" dovo with the same problem and I assure you those creases will not come out due to the tanning and pressing process it goes through.
Do not try a home fix on it....send it back!!

Hello Roadie,

Just call ClassicShaving.com and ask for a Return Authorization Number. They will be able to exchange the strop. They sell thousand of strops and they know how to pack them...so don't use the excuse that they did something wrong. Just explain your situation and I know they will do the right thing!

My strop was packaged correctly by the vendor I bought from but it was packaged wrong when sent to him. So, Classicshaving may not have caused the problem and may not have realised they dispatched a creased strop to you.
